Nikon D40

Hey all,

Been thinking about getting a Nikon d40. I am amateur and would be upgrading from a point and shoot. i've seen some pics here from members who do amazing jobs, and wanted to know what everyone thinks of the d40.

any suggestions?

thanks

From what I hear, the D40 packs a hard punch in it's small package. The only thing bad about the D40 is the lens capability. The camera will only Autofocus with the latest AF-S styled lenses. Other lenses you'll have to manually focus. If you're just planning on using the lenses that come with the D40 Kit then you'll have no problem. But as you get better over the years you'll want to upgrade to nicer pieces of glass. All in all, the D40 is a great camera. What I personally didn't like about it is that it's kind of small and doesn't fit my hand as nicely as the other higher end cameras. It doesn't allow you to have a natural grip, instead you have to scrunch your fingers a little bit so that your pinky finger has something to sit on (if that makes sense). If you hold a D80 or D90 it'll feel beefy and fit your hand perfectly as if you can hold it all day without complaints. I own a D50 and I love the way it feels. This is just my opinion. Make sure you go and play around with it and make sure you love it before you buy it. Good luck!

I like the D40, I almost bought one before I opted out for the D60 which is about the same size & weight.

It makes all pictures look amazing!

Get some filters for it, I usually try to keep a UV or polarizing filter on the end so the lense doesn't get scratched.

All my pics have basic editing.

No, no, no -- stay away from Ken Rockwell at all costs. He's pretty much a laughingstock on most serious forums b/c quite a bit of his "facts" and information is either just wrong, somewhat inaccurate, or often just made up completely. Ken's all about getting traffic to his site so you'll click his sponsor's to make him money. There's more than a few instances of him saying one thing in one post, and then the complete opposite in another later post. Do yourself a favor and head to nikoncafe.com, the nikon forums on dpreview.com or Fred Miranda, Luminous Landscape, Thom Hogan's site, nikonrumors.com, or nikonians.org if you want real, useful, information.
