pre-paid phones - Recommendations?

Very, very off FIT topic, but I need to get a cell phone that is without subscription and wondered if anyone here has any advice/suggestions.

I've looked into TracFone, and people either love them or hate them and strongly caution you away. Someone suggested CricKet, but I can't seem to find much info on them.

I'm looking for a phone only for emergencies while traveling and for use when on vacation. This would not be for heavy use at all.

Bascially, I am looking for reliable, cheap, with decent coverage.

Any help would be appreciated.

My very frugal graduate student friend has a Straight Talk phone from Wal-Mart and it seems to work well.

I've never heard him complain about the service. Of course he has no internet and limited messaging though.

Thanks for your input. Went to WalMart today and got a Samsung TracFone for $10, for $20 got 6 months of service and 140 minutes of talk. I read lots of negatives about TracFone, but the phone seems to be of good quality and it took all of 5 minutes to set up online.

No Internet, limited texting, but will serve the purpose of use only in emergencies, vacations, and when Salmon Fishing in Pulaski (and other areas) where there are limited public phones available.
