Honda Civic timing belt
Hi. I have a Honda-civic, year 2000 driven about 138,000 Kms (about
85,000 miles). It runs great. No complaints. However, the timing-belt
has never been changed on this car. Is it due now? How much should it
cost to replace, approx estimate. Thanks, Kenny.

It is almost due. The interval for your car is probably 6 years or
140,000km (check your manual), so I would suggest getting it done as soon as
possible. Don't know about cost, but since your warranty is most likely
expired, I would suggest finding a private mechanic who specializes in
Japanese cars. Make sure you get the water pump replaced at the same time.

Because 100% of the labor is common between the timing belt replacement
and the water pump replacement.
If you do them both, you pay for the labor charge one time.
If you do them separately, you pay for the same labor charge both times.
Do the timing belt; it costs $X. If you add the water pump to it,
they'll simply add the price of the part itself to your $X bill. No
extra labor.
You'd HATE to do the timing belt and then go in 6 months later for the
water pump and pay for all that labor all over again.

If the Civic is like the Accord, the water pump is driven by the timing
belt. Your mechanic is already in there, he may as well replace it at
the same time. That way if the pump fails you won't have to have someone
rip the end of the motor off to change it. Also another responder
suggested that you price an independent shop. I just had the timing belt
changed in my 2000 Accord and the Dealer was about 85 bucks cheaper than
the independent shop that I was going to hire for the job. It pays to
shop around.

Most dealers and independents that know what they're doing will
replace the belt tensioner pulley while they're at it. It's fairly
cheap insurance, since the pulley or water pump seizing will likely
kill the belt and lead to expensive valve damage.

because if it fails and/or siezes before the next timing belt change,
youll be paying for another timing belt change. and possibly a new head
and/or valves. the pump is run off the timing belt.

My Civic DX 2000 manual says change belt at 105,000 miles.

I just had my second timing belt change on my 94 del Sol. Had an
independent Honda mechanic do it for $330.00. He replaced the belt,
water pump, tensioner and did a valve adjustment for me since the valve
cover was off anyway. The car runs like a champ. I suggest getting a
valve adjustment as well.
