Is the breather tube ALSO clean, and are the valve cover baffles not
sludged up?

If the PCV system is clear, then almost certainly the oil control rings are
worn.

Eventually the oil burning will be consistent. Watch your oil level: It
will go down quickly now.

Correct. Rebuild/replacement time. The rings have worn to the point that
they've relaxed their hold on the cylinder wall.

A 20W-50 *might* help a little. You've got nothing to lose in trying it.
