Hi, just measured the thickness of the front brake disks on my Civics,
but I could not find the minimum thickness engraved on the discks. So I
wonder if any of you knows ths specs, minimum thickness, and if you
also know the maximum thickness (when the discks are NEW) that would
also help (i.e. I could figure out how much I used and how much I have
left.

Civic 1997 LX Manual: 20.25 mm (114k miles)

For the 1997, http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/CivicManual/index.html , under
Specifications, then "standards and service limits" says new, the front
rotors are supposed to be 20.9 to 21.1 mm. The service limit is 19.0 mm.

Your 1997's rotors are not even at the halfway point (20.05 mm) for wear.
(This assumes they are not scored badly and thickness is even.)

Majestic's online parts site indicates the 2001 LX and 1997 LX use the same
front rotors.

For your reference, my 1991 Civic LX's front rotors at 168k miles are not at
the halfway point, either, though they're getting close. I do brake a lot
with the engine, as opposed to the front and rear brakes.

While I'm watching thickness variation and one bad score on one of the
rotors, I'm figuring my Civic's rotors are going to last the life of the
car.

 

When Honda front break pads wear down to a certain minimum thickness, a
pin will start touching the rotor surface when you break, and you will
start to hear a high pitched scratching sound. That is when you change
the pads. I think the 2001 Civic is the same way (I do not know whether
this is the situation with ABS equipped cars-but the LX does not have
ABS as far as I know..........).

It's a good thing that I kept my original Honda rotors when I replaced them
for Brembo cross drilled rotors. The Brembo have already survived 4 pads and
190,000km. Hopefully, it won't be too much of a problem to remove 4 years of
rust off the original rotors when the Brembo finally give-up.
