Hi all,

I have a 93 Accord EX 5 sp that is emitting a chirping noise from the
right front wheel. The chirp is made with each rotation of the wheel
and increases in frequency with increased speed. I've installed new
rotars, brake pads + greased shims and a new caliper...still get the
chriping noise. When I apply the brakes, the chirp stops, and then
starts again upon release... Left side is quiet! Also seems to chirp
louder when turning the steering wheel about 1/8 - 1/4 turn to the
left...when I turn the wheel to the right 1/8 - 1/4 the chirp goes
away... Sure seems to be a brake noise, but thought changing all the
components would fix the noise... No luck! Anyone have any further
trouble shooting suggestions? Thanks! Honda Man

Three things:

1) Check the splash shields behind the discs. They rust and get bent or
sag, eventually touching the rotor. Can touch around outer perimeter, or
inside, near hub.

2) Check the pad slide shims where they clip onto the caliper mount
bracket. The rotor gets rust around its perimeter, which contacts the shim.

3) Do you have ABS? Might be a rusty gear wheel touching something as it
turns.

Hi Tegger,

Thanks for the ideas! Great web site with photos! Thanks for the
link. I checked out the splash guards, nothing touching the rotor.
Also looked at the slide shims and found no contact with the rotor. As
a sind note, no rust on the rotor as they are new. I do have ABS...not
sure how to check and see if a rusty gear wheel is touching something.

One other thing, I jacked up the wheel off the ground gave it a spin,
and no chirp, seems to only happen when driving.

Could it be as simple as cheap brake pads? I installed $12 pads
purchased from a national auto parts store. I'm thinking of buying and
installing the Honda OEM $50 front pads...Anyone have a thought on
this?

If it were pads, it would happen even when you jack the wheel up and spin
it.

When you drive, the rotor and its surrounding components heat up, however
little. When they heat up, marginal clearances will close up and cause
contact between parts that should not contact. There's still the
probability that something is rubbing somewhere. I would suggest you slowly
pull everything apart and look carefully for shiny spots *anywhere* where
parts come near the rotor.

The ABS sensor is behind the rotor, surrounding the CV joint boot. That's
the last thing left, isn't it? Check carefully for scuffing around the
gear-like thing.

Unless it's the CV joints...

That sounds like a plan. I'll take a look and see if I can locate the
rub...

Found out what was making the noise...the REAR disc was warped causing
a rub on the brade pad with each revolution. Replaced the rear dics
and pads, all is quiet again! Sure sounded like it was coming from the
front while in the car driving, when actually it was coming from the
back.
