Holy Monkey
OK, so I surprised, to say the least, that there are multiple Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep cars on the CARS program list. I think the Caliber is the ONLY car anyone should consider (if they want that massive $$ rebate from the Gov. and Chrysler/Dodge). Anyway, I was even more surprised to see the PT cruiser there. I used to own one (well lease...thank's dad! <$150 / month) and it got atrocious mileage. I used to keep a log of miles driven/fuel pumped and I went looking for it when I saw the cruiser on the CARS list at 23 combined (MT I'm sure). Here, just for fun, are a few lines from my notebook:
50/50 252 Miles / 13.9 Gallons = 18.1 MPG
60/40 311 Miles / 14.3 Gallons = 21.7 MPG
70/30 324 Miles / 14.6 Gallons = 21.9 MPG
80/20 371 Miles / 13.9 Gallons = 26.7 MPG (back seat delete + hypermiling)
I can't believe this car is on the list, in any form. Because it got such horrible mileage, i barely drove (5-7K a year). It was a reasonably comfortable/powerful car, but man, it was ugly and inefficient as hell.
Once I started hypermiling I would get 22-25 on a regular basis, but still...i had to try really hard, and drive highway as much as possible.
They should take this thing off the list. At least they aren't making them anymore. They wouldn't be so bad if they didn't suck gas.

i wont be able to tell a difference.
also kidding. ;)
but anyway, good find. the PT wasn't that bad of a car actually when hertz gave one to me to use during one of my biz trips.
it was better riding car than colt, yaris, corolla, lucern, etc. :)

Ha, exactly my point. :)
No, it wasn't. It was really a stable, responsive, ride--just not worth the money that you had to sink into it to keep it running (fuel).
I actually posted a full list of cars that qualify for the CARS program here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gene...wn-better.html
Oh man...the Yaris.

dont talk about the pt loser. it is terrible. and there is one in my driveway.
things that are terrible
-mpg. 18-26 the range
-visibility. roof comes down too low. im 5'8" and sit is a 'normal' position and I cant see stop lights. nor can I look behind over the shoulder and the side mirrors are small and odd shaped.
- seats. possibly the worst that I have sat in. butt, lumbar and back. I have adjusted every position possible. compared to a base 94 ranger with vinyl bench seat.
-new brakes at 45k, but that could be bc of my girlfriend.
-steering wheel. big enough for a school bus.
-no abs (on the model in the driveway)
-steering. feels like the car does not like to turn at all.
blah.
