The New Civic

...and an automatic option (poop) to help the SI appeal to a larger demographic -- according to the forums at temple of vtec

The lack of a hatchback is a deal killer for me. I was hoping for a hatchback Si offered in two states of tune, one that would still be happy with 87 octane gas but more performance orientated than the basic model and a full-bore pocket rocket. It looks like I'll either have to continue my search for a 2004 or 2005 Si in good condition or buy the new Ford Focus when it arrives.

Too many cars have the same identity. Car reviewers call it 'playing it safe'. If you took badges off most mid level sedans and presented them to average joes (not car enthusiasts) they'd have a damn hard time of identifying what brand they belong too.
I also abhor the 'up-sizing' of car models. What's wrong with a small civic? I just hope the Fit doesn't become the next odyssey.
Who else thinks we should just drive go-karts everywhere?

Wishful thinking for many unfortunately...
It is pretty safe to say that as long as the Fit and CR-Z are around we won't be seeing a Civic "hatch" any time soon.
You have to remember that the Civic is now Honda's mid-size entry level car, and no longer associates itself with the compact or hatchback market. It really hasn't fit in that class since 2000; the 7th Gen Si hatchback was an utter failure and wasn't even offered in Japan from what I understand.
As long as the Civic keeps being compared to Altimas, Elantras, and Fusions, a hatch-version will only remain a nostalgic memory.

Unfortunately, they are making this but in euro and japan markets

Yes even in South Africa they get this model. I have seen it up close and personal including the type R version. Very nice car. Has character, unlike the Civic models we get.
The only upside is that I like our Fit Sport better than the Jazz that many markets get. 1.3 liter CVT no thank you.

Revealed: The production-ready 2012 Honda Civic
If you weren't sure about the look of the concept Civics, how do you feel about the production ready Civic?

The version in the link above looks terrible. I'm assuming the one pictured if the Hybrid model...egads, that's a bad time. The steering wheel looks awful, the 2nd tier information display looks very convoluted compared to the simplicity of the previous gen's display...and are those blue LED's on the grill? Bleargh.
