That drives me nuts. "Yeah, we screwed up, and while we expect you to trust us enough to give us your money before we ship you the product, we refuse to trust you enough to send us back the wrong item before we ship you the one you ordered to begin with." I ordered a guitar online from Giardinelli.com once, and the company sent me a bunch of harmonicas instead. They acknowledged their error, but wouldn't ship me the guitar I'd ordered until they received their harmonicas back...with the total shipping time making it such that I wouldn't have the guitar by the time I actually NEEDED to have it. I told them to keep their guitar and just give me my money back when they got their harmonicas, and resolved never to do business with them again. Oh, but I'm willing to share my story with as many people as possible so they don't make the same mistake.
