Warranty Act

 

I often see the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act mentioned on various forums and it's indeed the law, but if problems surface, Service Managers will be slow to yield to customer demands and bringing an Attorney into the mix adds further discomfort and delay. Heck, getting routine, unfettered warranty service can even be a struggle sometimes.

I've done my share of shadetree automotive work over many years and I've found that OEM parts are often better engineered and last longer anyway. I owned a Honda years ago and found that replacement parts (water pump, heater control valve and hoses) from the auto parts stores lasted half the life of the original Honda parts. Just my $0.02.

 

I find it depends on age, cars under about 7 years old, yep OEM, after that, they are selling you the same Beck Arnley stuff that Autozone does... some things like gaskets, I've had way better luck with Timpkin or Felpro than the OEM. Its kinda luck of the draw for me..

Good points dwtaylordx -- I must agree that as my vehicles age beyond 175,000 Miles, my repair goals turn to economy, not longevity.

Sometimes though, an aftermarket part can improve on the original. A few months ago I installed this small $65 CNC-machined bracket on my wife's 2010 VW, thus avoiding an $800 replacement of the entire intake manifold!
