We'll look into fixing the smiley substitution. This might be a side effect of the editing plugin we use. For now, try using the smiley drop down in the editing toolbox to get smilies like the following:

Okay, I've found my confusion - The smiley dropdown doesn't appear on the Mac, so there's no way to add them here (except for manually entering the IMG tags).
Not really a huge problem, but thought I'd let you know. This is using the very latest version of Safari on the Mac.
