FT: my auto services for..
...your computer nerd services.
here's the issue (maybe). I had a buddies laptop that had a virus and couldn't get rid of it, so i reformatted it and installed avast! anti virus. Scanned it 2 times last night, and once today...everything panned out fine.
Allllll was well until i used his step daughter's thumb drive to put stuff on that laptop to his other laptop. VIRUS ALERT! now, all I am doing is moving them to "the chest" which avast! recommends. Is this okay or not? if not, this is where i may need to trade services. Kinda freaking out here
If you have hints, tips or suggestions I am allll ears. If you dont think I can handle it, and you need suspension work or stuff like that, we can trade work? hopefully, maybe?
Thanks kiddies!

If you don't execute/open the files then they can't infect anything. For now they are being quarantined so they can't be opened. You can try to clean it but if anything I recommend scanning the thumb drive. Most likely can be done by right clicking the thumb drive and looking for the AV scan option.

tossed the thumb drive. i copied all of the music he had on the laptop pre reformat. he paid a lot for his music through itunes so he wanted to keep it. so once that was done, i attempted to put the music back on his old laptop and the new one, that's where shit went haywire. I had scanned his music folder before moving it and that was clear, so i know it isn't that which is infected.
so would having these in the chest be fine? or should i delete them?

ok...i dont need your auto service, i'll just help you out.
um 1st off unplug everything thats external USB and get the computer up and running then reformat the computer/laptop again and this time install the anti-virus stuff, microsoft has one thats free(i have it and it works pretty damn good.) its called Microsoft Security Essentials. run that to scan the the computer after the reformat, then plug in the thumb drive last. the anti-virus should pop up
thumb drives are like old school floppies. if the drive has a virus in it and you save data on that drive, you wont know it untill you transfer the data on the drive to another computer and when you plug it in, there's a window that automatically pops up and that basically lets the virus run free on the NEW computer. basically like AIDS...haha
that should work.

Conficker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
thats probably what i think it is, probably an old variant conficker B or C and when it says removeable media, it means literally anything that can store data, cellphones, thumbdrives, cameras, memory sticks via card reader.
thats assuming you don't have anything else you are backing up like no dvd hacks or data gathering dlls and keygens because those are safe, they just give false positives because they act like trojans sometimes.
since you have formatted before, you shouldn't have anything on the suspect computer so i suggest formatting again to get to a clean state using a reliable source, get your network up so that you can go online and download microsoft security essentials and start updating with patches and geting all the drivers for the computer if you need it. finally you can start moving data back. you can basically ignore any warning popups about viruses because thats telling you that there is something potentially dangerious there, it wont run it but just to tell you about it and you should probably clean it or isolate it like how avast tells you by putting it in the "chest".
as long as you have some sort of virus protection as soon as possible, its pretty hard to get infected and the warnings are just warnings. if it isnt an important file then you could just delete that file.
