i could see wider tires being safer for braking and handling. More traction to stock quicker and/or swerve around obstacles. It'll probably slow acceleration and decrease mpg.
Although, I would say the exception would be in snow/ice conditions. Since I live in the sunnier parts of california, I wouldn't know what would be the right kind of tires to use in snow/ice.
