I've kept track of my stats on every fill-up for the last year. Here is a brief run down.

Total miles driven: 11947.7
Total gallons: 310.4
Ave per fill-up: 9.4 gallons
Actual mpg: 38.47
Computer estimated mpg: 39.61
Ave. miles per $ of gas: 12.58
Ave. miles driven per day: 39.3
Ave. fuel price per gallon: $3.13
Ave. gallons used per day: 1.03
Ave. $ of gas used per day: $3.13
Ave days between fill-ups: 11

The average deviation from actual mpg versus the computer estimated is 1.14 gallons or 2.88% This is in line with what I read when I first bought the car.

I also kept track of the mpg with 87 octane and 89 octane and found *NO* difference in mpg so I am no longer spending the extra $$ for 89 octane.

Do you regret not getting the sport model?

 

It's going to be pretty tough to find a difference between 87 and 89 without a scan gauge. Do you have 93 available? Try some colder range plugs as well.

You will see a difference. I certainly do...


This is with me not being especially nice to it either. When behaving I routinely see more than 420miles on a tank if I run it down to to E line. But that is not good for the pump nor do I enjoy driving the slow.

Just something to think about before you write off higher quality fuel in a 10.4:1CR engine that relies on the knock sensor for spark advance.

Also there's more to the higher grades than just octane content. They tend to contain more upper cylinder lubes and detergents.

All in all, my stats have stayed steady from 1 year to 11 years. Slight differences but still very good. 5-spd manual.

I did have a motor mount break about 2 years ago and had the dealership do the 100k service too since it was at that point. I only just replaced my break pads and shoes at about 120k and did not need to replace drums and rotors. I also replace the rear shocks last year. I have a few plastic fasteners that I need to replace and will do that yet this summer. I just had a front airbag impact sensor go bad and am in the process of getting a replacement. I do most of my own work on the car which has kept the operating cost very low for me. I've paid a lot less on cars in the past but I've never had one be this inexpensive.

Your car has retained its efficiency across 11 years. I'm glad I trusted car and driver way back when. Now if Honda can put the XR650R back into production I'll be sold on the brand for life.

Thanks for sharing your record keeping. Which motor mount did you need to have replaced ? Surprised rear brake shoes were replaced at 120k given the fact how little they come into play with these cars. Service limit is 1mm according to factory manual.

 

To be honest, I only changed them because I had done the fronts and thought it was just good form to do the rears. I wasn't having any trouble with them.

I think it was the top mount on the passenger side? Not sure. When the engine dropped, it busted the timing chain cover too. A big mess and a big story involving my infamous local dealership. On the plus side, I contacted the factory and Honda covered $600 of the $1000 bill. 60% was paid by the factory on a car that was out of warranty.

 

Thanks for your reply. My 09 has about 177k miles and original mounts. Rear shoes original also at 2mm min thickness. Getting ready to replace them soon. Sounds like you were very lucky that Honda was willing to pay 60% of that bill.

 

The thing is that I still work at the same place and live in the same place. One difference is that sometime after the first year, I installed a trailer hitch and bought a trailer from Harbor Freight that allows me to haul full sheets of plywood or drywall. I don't use it much but I do use it and it does take a toll on the car. Recently I hauled all of a concrete patio and front walk from my house to a place about 15 miles away. Took about a dozen trips to do. Immediately after rotated my tires and changed the oil to compensate a bit for the extra wear on the drive train.

Anyway, my point is that I don't do much different over the 11 years I've owned the car. The slight reduction in efficiency can be explained by my in frequent use of my car as a truck.

I have never kept track of the fuel used in my vehicles, or motorbikes.
It doesn't help that I don't know how to convert liters, and kms, into mpg.
My last fill up was before a trip, so I filled up with the gas gauge still at half, took 23.17 liters, and had driven 288.4 kms. If anyone good at math wants to convert that into mpg, please do.

 

So 179.203 miles and 6.12 gallons equals about 29 mpg.

Feel that is very good considering it was mixed city, secondary roads, and hwy, with probably 95% of the time running the AC.

 

Yes, that’s about what I get in my 09 Fit, automatic transmission with about 175k miles under probably similar driving conditions.
