I believe the ECU just regulates how much power the alternator outputs. If the alternator can output more power, it will when the engine asks for it.
The reasons alternators fail in the first place is because the ECU tells the alternator it needs more power and since an under-powered alternator can't meet that demand, it will be always running at full power and eventually eat up.
I could be wrong, I don't claim to be an expert in this area.
