And they say it couldnt be done.... HID retro with reflectors. Im super happy with the results. You can see how scratched up and pitted these spare lights are, so what little stray light is there will probably be even less.
I think what he did was build a custom anti-glare shield to mimic a cutoff. The line is pretty good for not being projectors, but the way the light pattern is is kinda useless because the light is not shining down on the ground where it's supposed to be. It looks like it's a rectangle of light in front of u rather then being an inverted trapezoid of light in front of you.
Well the term "retro" has been associated with projectors, but IMO its outfiting HID's into headlights that dont come with them.
The first problem with most HID PnP kits are they use D2S bulbs. These are meant for Projectors. Many Cars from the factory came with HID's without projectros acura's Merc's Nissans etc. These use d2R bulbs.
So thats where i started. I then found a piece that would alow me to fit the D2R bulbs directly into the H4 housing.
The second problem with PnP HID kits are they pay no attention to the stock bulb focal length. Relfectors and projectors alike are designed to focus light from a source from a specific distance away from the 'bowl' or lens.
So i used spacers to get the bulb to sit where it should to not scatter light. I used no shields of any sort. So when you say the output will be bad, this is what your stock reflectors would look like. If i had a spare H4 bulb i would light it up and show you. Its just decieving because the light is 10ft from where it comes out, so its not very spread out then.
The output will look like this, just more intense due to the HID's. My lights with just orasm bulbs.....
Ill get more pics today inside the shop instead of my house.
That is pretty sweet. I want to see pics of how you did this, sounds relatively simple. Want to see beam shots and oncoming shots (to confirm no glare) once they are mounted back in the car.
Thats what I did also to my Fit. I will try to get pics today of them. I used H4 Casper shields with OEM BMW ballast so I can use D2R bulbs. I never have any one on the freeway hi beam me at all. Most likely because our Fit is already pretty low.
From your picture it seems like your passenger side is aimed more towards the driver side.
With the D2R/S bulbs you pretty much don't need hi beams. I went this route (untill I have time to retrofit with my projectors) mainly because I could not live without HIDs since I am so use to it when I had my Civic w/ retrofit projector. With the OEM HID kit I know the components will not blow up on me after a year. The bulbs are Osram or Philips which will last a very long time. Yes you won't have a super nice cut off, but that can always be changed by modifying the casper shield.
