if your area is pretty good with snow removal, you can get a way with getting continental DWS tires. i tried it this winter on my '12 and did very well considering they are not snow tires. for deep snow 5" + it struggled, but areas with 2" or less, no issue at all.
my 09 is running bridgestone WS60 snow tires. those are very capable in deep snow.

The one thing I do not like with these comparisons is I start looking at similar cars. First it is the Impreza then I think what about a WRX then I move up to a used bugeye STI.
After figuring I would end up with around a 2006 to 2007 STI with plus 55k miles at a cost of over $20k , premium gas, 20mpg I think I will wait for gas to drop back to $2 per gallon then I will buy it.

Kinda gets your hand itchy to pull the trigger doesn't it? 
Those are definitely not for the mpg conscious. On a good day with all the planets lined up I get 27 at best but mostly low 20's average...

My buddy just got a 2011 M3 V8 gets 18 mpg however, he only puts 6k on his car a year where I can do from 20 to 26k depending on my schedule. 55k could mean 100k within two years. Maybe in a few years I will drop my Miata (summer car) and pick up a STI (if prices drop) as my winter beater Ha Ha (you have to give your wife a good reason).

Do you drive it often or is it you fun car at this point? I have never had a WRX always looked at them.
I like the first generation in the USA I think the WRX was sold outside the country in years prior to 2000 not sure. I am still fond of the 2006 -07 WRX (hawkeye) (still carry their value) it is one of those cars like the Datsun 510 that is on my wishlist.

Amazing looking car. Back then they were just eco-boxes. Another car that should be consider in the mix is the Mazda3 my daughter brought one yesterday i grand automatic with heated leather seats, Skyactive. for $18,500 list $23,650 dealers seem to be giving big discount. Prior to her her buying I got her a quote a auto Fit Sport 2013 at $18,100.

Wow, nice! Definitely something to consider. Sounds quite loaded compared to the Fit's features. BTW, saw a pix of the WRX concept car from the NY Auto Show. Looks like a take-off from the BRZ but sure looks nice.

I drove the Mazda 3 hatch recently because I've always read very positive reviews about it but i must say i was not impressed at all. The interior was much more cramped and cheaper feeling than the Fit and it felt very sluggish w the automatic. I also drove the 2013 Honda Civic which I was very impressed with, very quiet, smooth, and the interior felt fairly upscale.
