Snow

Hi guys- I've been evesdropping here for awhile now and plan to get an '09. I currrently drive a Forester, so this question is of interst to me as well. I had planned to buy another set of wheels and get some good snow tires for winter but see that the tire sites are admonishing everyone to only put snows on in sets of four...is this a real concern or sabre rattling to sell more tires?

Interesting question. for decades we have only put snow tires only on the drive wheels and the steered wheels if different. but on our Fit we put all 175/65x15 'ice bears' cause we frequently visit Grandfather Mountain area of NC regularly during the winter season. Its not like that is equal to our driving a Fiests in the Alps but we had absolutely no trouble.
I'd say it depends on how quickly you want to go. The Fit steers and drives on the front and the rears merely keep the bumper from dragging.
If there's any marketing drive to all 4 its probably due to our lawyers just hunting for someone to sue. But if you need to keep the rear in control all 4 winter tires are preferrable.
Why 175/65x15's ? cause in snow and ice a little larger diameter and a little narrower tire is beneficial. Up where you are see what the winter rally guys wear.
good luck.

i have a wrx. same platform as your car i guess. not much snow or ice in ga. but i had a crx for a long time. and had opportunities to drive that car in the snow/ice and while not as good as the subie, it would go anywhere i wanted. so i assume the fit will be good to go. not as good as awd, but good enough.
i like driving in snow, get so few opportunities to do it. unless its rear-wheel drive...

One thing to note, the Fit doesn't really weigh that much so the front drive tires are pretty light ont the snow. With an automatic I think it's not too bad, with my manual it was quite tricky to get the car moving. My 06 civic 5AT with summer tires on it did better than the Fit with the stock all-seaons, then again the Fit was my first FWD manual I've driven in the snow. But it performed from a stop about as good as my rwd dakota. Once you get going though it's not too bad. I plan on buying at least two snow tires for the front drive wheels this year.

fit dropped 1 1/2"(winter mode, 2.5" summer) with 175/70/15 Toyo GO2 Plus winters and no problems. It's not AWD but for a FWD car it's pretty good. made a decent snow plow this year with the 10+ feet of snow we had in montreal this year.
