Both Headlights went out simultaneously....need help troubleshooting

Honda Fit Forums - Headlight Problem

Hello All,

I have a 2008 Honda Fit Sport.

Recently, both of my headlights went out at the same.

Here are the facts of the matter (hoping someone can help me troubleshoot):
  1. The HIGH beams stopped working about 6 months ago, BUT the regular lights, running lights and turn indicators still work.
  2. The Running Lights and Turn Indicators Still Work.
  3. I checked that the plugs into the back of each headlight were securely fastened...and they are.
  4. I checked both fuses in the fuse box....Both are Good
  5. I checked the Relay, in the fuse box, right next to the actual fuses, in terms of pulling it out and seeing if there were any apparent signs of scorching or damage...and it looked brand new (don’t now how to check it otherwise; don’t have a volt meter, etc.).
I’m trying to prevent having to remove both headlights, as the probability of both headlights going out and the EXACT SAME TIME, is close to zero. I mean, I’ll do it as a last resort, but I’m putting this out on the forum in case someone has experienced this before and has the fix before I go through the trouble of removing the headlights.

Does anybody else have any suggestions as to things I can check to track down this problem?

Thanks,

J

Could be the switch. Do they work when you pull the turn signal stalk back?

No, when you pull back on the stalk to activate the high beams, they are still not working, and the regular beams are still not working.

Are the terminals on the relay discolored? If you shake the relay next to your ear can you hear something rattling?

Passenger Compartment Fuse Box A (The one with no cover, diagram is under steering column)
#15 Right Headlight High Beam 10 Amp
#29 Left Headlight High Beam 10 Amp

Engine Fuse Box A (Behind Battery)
#1 Headlight Low Beam Main 20 Amp (Most likely cause of both shutting off at the same time)
#32 Right Headlight Low Beam 10 Amp
#33 Left Headlight Low Beam 10 Amp

I hope this helps and there's a fuse you may have missed!

AstroPacillo's got some good points!

If a relay fails, it'll most likely not going to be visible. Only way to be sure it's not the relay is to buy one, plug it in, if it doesn't have have any effect then return it. OR if you don't want to go through the return thing, IF there's another circuit that uses the same relay, swap them to see if it changes anything.

I'm hoping its not the switch, that's the most expensive compared to fuses and relays :S.

Interesting question...

I don't have the car in front of me right now, but will this Saturday, and now that you mention it, I seem to remember that some of the four copper terminals did have a slight purple-ish patina to them (like when you have a first rain and oil sheens on water puddles). I didn't think anything of it at the time, but I do seem to remember seeing that.

As for the shaking, I forgot that that will sometimes alert you to something having broken inside.

So, I'll have to check that out this weekend and get back to you.

Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

My girlfriend's FIT is a 2008, so the fuse box diagrams and fuse locations are different on her's:

https://fuse-box.info/honda/honda-fi...007-2008-fuses

For instance, I don't see any fuses in the passenger compartment related to the headlights, and the fuses in the engine compartment are different numbers.

Having said that, I will check both fuse boxes and the relay you mentioned in the previous post, this weekend when I'm there.

Thanks again for the help/insight.

Best regards,

Justin

The car is subject to recall on headlight issue.
Make sure it has been completed before proceeding
