Help an idiot - Pulled aftermarket alarm, car won't start
Hi Folks!
I have a car emergency on my hands, resultant from my being clueless and thinking I know how things work.
I have a 2008 honda fit Base model. GD3, manual transmission. It came with a non-functional security system. I decided to replace it with a FICBOX, and this afternoon pulled the old one out - disconnected all the harness wires that came with it. Didn't cut anything, and made sure that the only things I'm removing are the wires of the alarm harness.
Predictably, now the car lights up but won't start - which makes sense, as this is exactly what the car alarm is designed to do - prevent thieves from pulling it out and driving off. difference is, of course, this is my car and it's in my parking spot.
I believe the problem is that there is a starter related wire that has been running through the old alarm when it was in there, and now needs to be somehow found and reconnected properly. But I have no idea what it is. The only lose wires I ended up with are two brown ones coming out form somewhere near the steering wheel, and this green one out of the harness by the Hood lever. (I'm attaching a photo here)
There was also a little red wire that was snaking together with a re/black one and ran towards a screw in the metal wall - presumably ground. I just tied those two together to both go to the same grounding screw. That part logically made sense.
If anyone knows which wires I may have missed and where they must go, please let me know.
Alternatively I can always get it towed to a dealer but It will take a long time and most importantly I will not learn a damn thing from my mistakes <facepalm>
Please help a hopeless romantic / clueless mechanic out.
I thhhhhhhhhink I'm onto something - the two brown cables are Starter Wires. They were plugged into these two terminals in the original alarm box. I was able to dig up the diagram for it! (Ignore the poopy looking thing on top of it - it's adhesive goop from previous setup)
Anyway, so I'm running 100% on logic here but - It seems that I just need to wire these two wires to the car's starter circuit. Any idea where that is?
Interesting.. I have no idea, but what if you just hold those two brown wires together, and turn the key? My guess, and i could be horribly wrong, is that: the previous system was just gapping that connection inside the box, until an unlock signal was received.
... It looks like maybe this is your old alarm thing: https://fccid.io/H5OR52/amp
Idk.. but its possible that brown wire was cut and those ends attached when this unit was installed. I have no experience in this area.
Well the Internet troubleshooting is fun ad productive, but let's start Justanswer game.
Prepare diagnostic tools:
test light with bulb, not led
jumper wire with 2 spade male terminals
relay pulling tool (IC tweezers from pc repair kit will work)
1.Remove under dash relay box cover
2.Refer tot he picture below
3. Using suitable tool pull out starter cut relay (2)
4. look on the relay foot print; there will be 2 long and 2 short slots
Clip the test light to the ground
one at the time, touch each
turn key to start every time you doing so
normally the test lamp will light on at one wide and one narrow slots during this time
If it lights up on at one wide slot but not in the narrow slot:
insert jumper into one wide slot and clip the test light to it's other end
touch other wide slot with sharp end of your test light
turn key to start
if lamp lights up
with key off, connect both WIDE slots with the jumper (this will bypass clutch switch circuit)
make sure car is in neutral
attempt to start the car with the key
let me know results
we will go from there
I am delighted to report that the vehicle is back on the road!
Big thanks to you both. The brown wires ended up being the gap in the circuit. I bridged them together as a test and It fired right up.
Doc J - I did end up getting a testlight and prodded around the Ignition Fuse footprint in the fusebox - for some reason none of the contacts were lighting up Perhaps it was because the wire was disconnected?
So, thanks again!
P.S. the only mystery to sort out now is what is that little leftover green wire on the side. The car runs just fine without it being plugged in anywhere...
