Noisy Speedo drive when very cold -30F
Hello fellow freaks,
When very cold recently there is a noise from the dash which sounds very much like a noisy speedo drive. Has anybody else experienced this?
I am not sure that the car has a speedo drive with all the electronic stuff, computer etc.

Just checked the manual. There is no mechanical drive to make noise. It looks like the conversion from mechanical rotation to electrical signal takes place in the VSS , vehicle speed sensor, at the clutch housing. So what is making the rattling noise behind the instrument cluster? It seems to be related to vehicle speed, not to the gear or engine rpm, and only happens when extremely cold.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure... Mine rattles something terrible right behind the gauge cluster whenever it's under 10F out, and the more dirt roads I drive the worse it gets.
Eventually the plastics will wear a gap, in a few years or so.

There are 4 screws that hold the gauge control module to the framework; there could be a loose one that allows a rattle when the temperature is cold due to shrinkage. (do not tighten these when temp is cold.)
There is also a possibility for one of the wiring harness to be resting on a surface due to cold that results in a rattle.
Is it really a rattle or a buzz? When does the rattle occur while its cold?
A rustling sound?
Rattles can be anything with a clearance that permits movement. A buzzing indicates something wuith no clearance but 'bounces'. A rustling indicates something sliding across another surface. These aren't perfect of course but usually are a good start to finding strange noises.
Someone else mentioned the glovebox rattling. Could that be your source; lots of things on and IN your glovebox that rattles, buzzes, and rustles. Try that first.
Good luck. You'll need it. cheers.

How boring... at least you have the occasional hurricane to stir things up !
Thanks to all for their replies.
I will try and tighten things up when it warms up a bit (a lot ).

Can't say as though I've heard that particular noise BUT I wouldn't worry too much about any strange noise at -30 unless you are having driveability issues. In my experience, LOTS of strange things happen at those temps when it comes to creaks, belt noise, rattles, etc. and it's almost always related to the extreme cold temps. It's amazing how the difference between even -20 and -30 impacts stuff like that. -40 and things go really goofy
