What on earth is this grid I see on my back window?
So, I've started noticing a strange grid-like pattern on my rear windshield when I look in the rear view mirror. However, my passenger can't see it when he turns around and looks, and I can't seem to see it from any other angle, not even up close. Am I losing my mind? Is this something standard on the car for some reason? It's most visible in the sunlight. I didn't notice it in the first few days I had the car (I've just had it ten days now) but today it really stood out. Any clue what this could be? I didn't find any tint on the window or any reflections that could explain it. Maybe I'm losing my mind.
Ah........ so what I'm seeing is on the mirror, not the window in the back? I considered that option but ruled it out when I couldn't see the pattern on anything but the window portion of the reflection and it seemed to stay in sync with the window when I moved my head around to see. And, I hadn't seen that kind of a pattern on any other car's rear-view mirror before.
Haha... no. That's certainly not it. What I see is radically different from the defroster lines or any derivative vision thereof.
I get this when I have my prescription sunglasses on. They have a polarized coating that makes a checker board and weird lines on my back window and windows of other cars. It is more pronounced when looking in the rear view mirror.
I actually have to tilt my head slightly when looking at the radio display with these glasses on because the coating on the display is the same direction as my glasses. I can actually make it go black if I hold my head just right. The same with the Credit Card machines at the gas stations. Kind of irritating at times, but these are the best glasses I have ever had for boating on Lake Huron.

You may be onto something! I just bought new polarized sunglasses the other day and yes, it seems like my noticing the checkerboard (great word to describe it) began showing itself around the same time. I'll test it, with and without them, the next time I go out to the car and see if that's it. Thanks, seeremlive.
BINGO! That's likely the cause. I get all kinds of rainbow effects when looking through tinted windows with mine on. Looking at someone else's tinted windows through my tint is even more weird. The back glass is like a checkerboard, only all the squares are the same color(s).
Hey seeremlive? Your sig line says 'the heart of motown' but...

This looks more like Belle Isle to me. Somewhere on the East end of the island near where the Detroit Zoo used to be.

I never have been to Bell Isle since I moved here 9 years ago. I always wanted to see the aquarium, but Kwamie got to it first.
Now that you've figured out what it is, maybe you could play an imaginary game of checkers or chess, while waiting behind a car at a light!

I too see this checkboard pattern when looking into my rearview mirror.
I only started seeing after I got my windows tinted, and I ONLY see it while wearing my sunglasses. I have both rx and non-rx sunglasses and I see it with both.
It took a while but I've gotten over it.

That's what I see, too. It's more pronounced when viewing from the inside.
