Power steering cut out while idling

Hey guys,

I was at a stoplight waiting to turn left. I was looking at my iPhone and when the light changed I tried to turn, I noticed that I had no power steering. I thought maybe my fit stalled since I drive manual 07. But no, the motor was still running. I had a little light of a steering wheel pop up on the cluster. So I pulled over and restarted the car and it fixed it.

Any ideas why this happened? Has anyone else have this problem? Will it get worse? Thanks.

there are a few fits on this site that have had this happen to them including my own, though i have a sport a/t.

the only person ever to get it fixed was someone who drove the car to the dealer with the light still on so they could diagnose the problem.

the solution? order a whole new eps system.

see, what fixes this is simply turning off your car. there is no real explanation for why the eps shuts itself off, it just does, and it sucks.

granted, in my 54k and two years of owning the fit, this has only happened 2 while driving, and the nearest stoplight was my saving grace. unfortunately for me, i was late to work the first time it happened and i was on a long stretch of highway. (my first car had no power steering so it was no biggie. lol) the other 2 times it has happened was right after starting up the car. so that makes for a total of 4 times in 2 years and 54k miles.

so yea, it does happen, but unless you drag the car to the dealer while the light is still on and tell them to diagnose without shutting it off, they will never find the problem.

funny thing is that while not as feedback-rich, my 2007 VW rabbits EPS steering never failed like this, not in the 28k/year and a few months that we owned it.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have a sport MT 07. I guess if it happens again I will drive straight to a dealer. That is if im on my way to work like today.

Does a new EPS get rid of the problem? Or has it popped up even after replacing the EPS?

new eps is expensive no? if its manual just turn the key like you are restatarting the car without ingauging the clutch this will cycle the car so you dont have to turn it off, this is not a cure but an easy way to get the kinks out i had to do this for my pioneeer d3 radio every so often to ingauge the blue tooth.

i'm pretty sure it did get rid of the problem.

i cant recall any threads from that member after he had it done, complaining about how it came back.

as far as expense goes, he said that had he not been covered under warranty, this would have been a 800 dollar ordeal, not including labor.
