When should I change my air filter?

I've got about 8K miles and my gas mileage is crap right now. Should I change my air filter? It looks kind of grimy but not totally nasty...

Oddly enough there is nothing in the glovebox manual about the air filter.

interesting i thought there was.

my fits maintenance minder told me when to replace mine. (like at 30k).

so just wait for the maintenance minder to tell you when to do it. i remember reading someplace in the manual that you have to do it every 15k if you live in overtly dusty areas.

Honda recommends you change it when maintenance minder #2 shows up, or in 15k miles if you live in dusty places. I would recommend you just buy a K&N drop in air filter for $40 dollars on Amazon so you don't have to buy new filters every 15k miles. For ease of use I have listed all the various codes as well as routine care listed by Honda on their owner link website.

If you don't have an account there you should sign up for one. https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/

Most of this info is also in your Honda Service History Manual you should have received from the dealer when you purchased the vehicle.

Maintenance Minder A Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace engine oil*1

*1: If the message "SERVICE" does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year.

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.
Maintenance Minder B Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace engine oil*1 and oil filter

Inspect front and rear brakes

Check parking brake adjustment

Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box, and boots

Inspect suspension components

Inspect driveshaft boots

Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS)

Inspect all fluid levels and condition of fluids

Inspect exhaust system#

Inspect fuel lines and connections#

*1: If the message "SERVICE" does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year.

#: See information on maintenance and emissions warranty on page 172 of your owner's manual.

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.
Maintenance Minder 1 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Rotate tires

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Maintenance Minder 2 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace air cleaner element
If you drive in dusty conditions, replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).

Replace dust and pollen filter
If you drive primarily in urban areas that have high concentrations of soot in the air from industry and from diesel-powered vehicles, replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).

Inspect drive belt

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Maintenance Minder 3 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace transmission fluid
Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds results in higher transmission temperatures. This requires transmission fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the maintenance minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the transmission fluid changed at 60,000 miles (100,000 km), then every 30,000 miles (48,000 km)*2.

*2: Automatic transmission

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.
Maintenance Minder 4 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace spark plugs

Inspect valve clearance

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Maintenance Minder 5 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2007 Honda Fit:

Replace engine coolant

Independent of the maintenance items in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Honda Maintenance Checks
Keep your Honda running like new. Between scheduled Maintenance Minder items, periodically check the following items:

Engine oil (orange loop dipstick)
Weekly or when you stop for gas. Add oil if the level is below the lower mark.

Engine coolant
Weekly or when you stop for gas. Check the reserve tank; don't remove the radiator cap - the fluid is hot and may gush out.

Windshield washer fluid (blue cap)
Monthly. Frequent users should check each time they get gas.

Automatic transmission fluid (yellow loop dipstick)
Monthly

Brake fluid (large gray cap)
Monthly. Low brake fluid could indicate a problem. Take your Honda to a dealer for service immediately.

Clutch fluid (small gray cap, manual transmission only)
Monthly

Power steering fluid (red cap)
Monthly

Tires
Monthly. Check pressure. Check tread for uneven or excessive wear and foreign objects.

Battery
Monthly. Check condition (level of fluid or color of the indicator). Check terminals for corrosion.

Air conditioning
Weekly. Turn it on for a short time.

Lights
Monthly. Check them all -- head, tail, parking, and brake lights, high-mount brake light, turn signals, back up and license plate lights.

I changed mine at like 20k, and replaced it with a K&N drop in. I cleaned that last night, and I have 45k miles.

changing airfilter frequency depends on driving conditions so if you're in a dusty area or have been exposed to wild fires with lots of ash, i'd change it much more frequently than wat the maintenance reminder says.
