Warming Up Your Car

Hey guys!

How do you guys usually warm up your car? I'm located in Orange County and its not too cold and its not too hot. What I've heard was warming up your car is bad for the engine internals and obviously wasting gas.

I would say its the complete opposite. When the engine is cold the internals are at a tight tolerance, so now if you didn't warm the car up properly those parts will wear out faster. Reason is some metals especially aluminum expands creating wear and tear. Ever since I got my FIT I always wait till its warmed up!

I would say it depends on mileage. My previous car had 180k on the motor and if I didn't let it warm up it would smoke like crazy, but with the Fit, its still new so tolerances are still in spec. Fuck wasting gas.

Here's how I warm my car up...
turn engine on
put on seatbelt
release e-brake
shift into reverse
let it idle out of the driveway
put it in 1st and stay under 3k rpm in the neighborhood
once I'm out on the "street"...I'm done warming up.

This.

No real need for a warm-up procedure really, if the engine is kept at a reasonable speed for the first couple of minutes, that's that.

I live in a gated community, and by the time I get out of the neighborhood and meet one of the main roads of my municipality, the engine's done warming up.

If Fits came with carburetors, I'd think about warming it up a little, to prevent it from stalling on colder days. In fact I do have to do that with my Suzuki motorcycle and its 2 barrel carb

I always warm my Fit (or anything I drive) up for its initial start.

Usually I...

Start the car
Seatbelt on
Plug in the iPod and find some tunes
Wait 5-10 secs or until 1000-1200 RPMs in cold weather
Pull out the garage, E-brake shift into neutral, close garage...

*By this time the cold light is usually off unless its cold*

...Get back in and drive, staying below 3k RPMs until I reach the highway
After reaching the highway, I'm done

well, winter is coming up and depending on where you live, it can get pretty cold overnight. in the winter, i just turn the car on, scrape the snow/frost, then smoke a cig and drink my coffee afterwards. by that time, it is well warmed up and ready to drive. i don't even bother warming up in the summer.

(SUMMER) I start the motor and wait until idle drops from 1500 rpm, this give the oil a chance to lube the engine. I Don't rev the motor past 3000 until engine gets 1/2 to 3/4 warmed up. Before I shut down the motor I put the Air Conditioner (so the fan comes on) for a minute to cool the oil, coolant so heat soaking is minimized.

(WINTER) I start the car and put on defroster and scrap the snow and ice off car, the engine is usually fully warmed after this. When I shut down motor I make sure all accessories are turned off and wait 15 seconds so that theres no load on the engine and the battery doesn't have a memory. Makes for easier starting the next morning.
