Throwout Bearing Issues?

Hi Fit freakers! I have been a GD Fit Sport MT owner for over a year now, and loving my car for the same amount of time!

Currenty at 65k miles, with brand new Honda MT fluid.

I seem to be having some crazy noises going on when the clutch pedal isnt pushed down. When idle, It sounds like loud whirring, rattling and ticking, when I push the clutch in, it stops. When I drive, it starts off real smooth sounding but around 2.5k rpm, it gets crazy loud; ticking and rattling that continues through every gear thereafter until im going fast enough not to hear it, usually the speed limit.

Is this my TO bearing doing this? I drive a lot and hope to god this doesnt totally break my tranny. Anyone change theirs before? Will it eventually break, shatter, or fall apart inside my transmission breaking everythng? Im gettin kinda scared.

Thanks for the help!

That does sound like a TOB issue. It could be that you need to re-adjust your clutch.. or the TOB is going.

Neither should cost you a transmission as the TOB resides outside the gearbox and in the bellhousing. But it could still f*** your day up if it fails and you bend the fingers on the pressure plate or gets jammed up in between the disc and the friction surfaces.

I would replace it myself or since that is involved and a lengthy process.. have it checked out at a reputable shop or the dealership.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking this thing is going to have to be replaced as its volume speaks for itself! We were also wondering; if the subframe had to be lowered to drop the trans?

Any other ways to take it easy on her until the repair? I read coasting with the clutch pushed it really wrecks it. (I do that somewhat often =X)

i melted together the shafts completely before by driving for 2 hours with a busted throwout bearing. (ended up having the replace the whole transmission, not on this Honda fit however, a different car)

it sounded really loud.. like queelllled really loud, it sounded like a centrifugal supercharger except it was louder, like 10x the amount of noise.

good luck, its a good thing you haven't been driving on it... my mistake was that it happened right at the begging of my journey going back to school.. and i went ahead and completed the 2 hour drive... sooo dumb on my behalf...

And... for me..... i think it did the same thing... push down the clutch and the sound went away.

Ignoring transmission noises is a recipe for disaster. You need to fix this ASAP! Otherwise, this small problem will cause other things to wear abnormally or catastrophically.

Well if you ride the clutch a lot, I can see that happening in 65k.

I don't think it SHOULD happen, but it certainly makes it more likely.

I also spend a decent amount of time on the clutch but I am only at 24.5k, so this just has me thinking.

But hopefully I will be replacing it with a new OEM unit when I swap to a lighter flywheel, sturdier disc and pressure after I boost it this summer.

That sounds awesome! Yea im coming from a 91 integra, drove the same as i drive the fit and
Didn't have to do any clutch work till 150k! Guess they don't take a beating like they used to. I'm thinking its made out of weak chinese steel. Now I have to decide if I wanna do a whole clutch pack so I won't have to open the trans back up at 100k! Bummer!

Just a warning to some of you guys.

I wouldnt coast around corners with the clutch pushed in or even think about sitting at a stop light/sign in first gear with the clutch in. Youll end up like me.

65k and SOL with a bad TOB!

I love my Fit but this issue is really getting to me. What happened to quality parts?

They make a million release bearings man, one is bound to be bad once in awhile. I feel your pain, though. The subframe does have to come out to remove the transmission. I would honestly look into a new clutch just for the sake of the transmission is already out, why not replace it at 65k miles... I think the exedy stage 1 goes for around 325? ... Book time for this is 6.5 hours of labor, around $500 - $600 at most shops. The release bearing is about $20-$30....

I had the same issue as well a while ago with my throwout bearing making noise. Replaced it only to have the sound go away partially. Ended up buying a whole new tranny and replacing it. This was all around 60k miles. I'm now at 73k miles and now my tranny is leaking Need to get that looked at now but my transmission still feels like crap and now I have trouble getting into gear at times. This car was definitely not meant to be driven hard.

I bought my 2008 Honda Fit sport from Mazda of course used they claimed he had no issues whatsoever but the very day I bought the vehicle I started to hear this weird whining sound coming from the clutch and it would stop when I put my clutch pedal down well after all said and done Mazda changed my clutch but it's still doing it and doing it way worse than it was the first time so that tells me that clearly it wasn't my clutch and I was charged for a part that didn't even need changed that something else is bad causing that to make the noise so when you have it checked out make sure they don't try to tell you what your clutch because you can change it it's still going to make that noise if something else is messed up then you'll be out of $1,600 for nothing
