so i got some new rims on my car friday, and they put on 215/45/17's and they rubbing like crazy. they replaced them with 215/40/17's and they rub every once in awhile. I need to know what exactly i can take out of the wheel well that woould stop this rubbing completely.

i have 205/40-17's with no rubbing issues at all. after a little while, you should be able to see where the tire is rubbing. then maybe be able to do something to help the issue.

 

I had my fenders rolled out to give it more clearance I also had 17's for a while

 

well since i went with the bigger tires they wont take them back.. i cant do anything but try and fix the issue now. where can i get my fenders rolled out at? just a body shop?

Well offset is critical.

 

The offset will most likely be stamped in the back the wheel somewhere. If you happen to know the name of the specific wheel you have, run a search on it real quick and find the offset if you can. I'm willing to guess its a +40 or +42 mm since that is a common offset for aftermarket wheels.

If memory serves me right, to run 205s on a GD it needs a wheel that has a +42mm offset and is 7 inches wide... **get ready for some math**

With the same 7 inch wheel width at a street side view, a 215 on a +42 offset would basically stick out as far as a 205 on a +37. So, you would need to reduce the wheel offset by 5mm which would bring the offset you need to +47 for a 7 inch wide wheel.

In other words: +42mm (the recommendation for 205s on a 7 inch wide wheel) +5 mm (half the extra tire width from 215s)= +47mm as the theoretical minimum offset. Mind you, this is a theory and I'm not 100% sure if that'll solve your rubbing so I will not be held accountable if it does or does not work.

But to make a long story short, you would either need a higher offset wheel to use the 215s or get a set of 205/40R17s (or a slightly narrower 195/40R17 or similar size). I hope this gives you an idea of what to do.

You could try tucking your front fender liners but with a 215s I honestly think you may clip your fender if it doesn't stop your rubbing.

 

You definitely need 205's, no matter what the offset is. The offset by itself may make you rub depending on how far the wheel sticks out... but 205/40's are a must!

 

Not really....

 

Cut tabs that hold rear bumper on. Drill new holes and zip tie bumper up. Roll fenders front and back. No more problems. There is a diy thread on tabs and rolling.

 

This is the same method I used to stop the rubbing. What you should do is make a sales thread sell the tires u have now n go with some stretched tires

 

You didn't mention what the offset of your wheels are. Anything less than 45 mm will rub. And 45 isn't necessarily safe either.
Like others suggest find out where the rubbing is occurring by using soap spray etc so the finish isn't ruined.
If the rub is inside the fender lip then you can probably get by with narrower tires or more offset, both are costly.
if its inside the rear fender liner you can remove the portions that rub , hopefully thats it.. If the rub is inside the fender well you can add spacers to position the tire outward but to be brutal we;'ve never seen that, especially with 215's which as many onserved is too wide. I'll add it's too damn heavy as well which will cost you mucho mpg and acceleration..

im running 205/40/17...
17x8.5 rear....had my fenders rolled, not much of an issue if i dont have pessengers in the rear, n i only rub on the driver side.....it rubs the lil screw that holds the fender n rear bumper together....gotta get that out in a couple of days,
cuz i jsut got these rims...

but fender roll is a must if u go 17s...

Not if you go with 42 to 45 mm offset wheels and 195/40x17 tires. And not lose mpg or acceleration from those heavyweight tires. And of course the potential loss in trade-in value from modding.

 

I'm on 215/40/17 wrapped around Work Emotion CR-Kai wheels (17x7 +42). I have an SPC camber kit up front and dialed in -2 degrees of camber on both left and right sides. I have no issues with the rear and saw that it naturally acquired about -1 degrees of camber. My GE8 is dropped on Eibach Sportline springs.

 

So it rubs a bit, so what? My wheels rub every now and then and even worst when I had the 15's and other then chewing up the tire a bit nothing happend. Just live with it and save the money from rolling or new tires

 

i had to go with 195/40-17, cut and roll my fenders, and camber the rear to get them to stop rubbing.
