Beginner/Newbie in need of Advice.

Hi all,

So I'm a undergrad student and my parents gave me a 2008 1st Gen Honda Fit. I've had it for 3 years now, runs fantastic and enjoy it a lot.

I want to modify the car so that if I want to race it in the future I can, but also I do a lot of traveling and need extra power and stability. I was hoping to learn a little from this forum.

Apart from that, my commute from home to school every other weekend kills me! Living in California (Bay area), the average speed of traffic is 75-80 mph and if I keep up I sometimes waste more gas than I want to because I'm cruising at 4000 rpm. I was thinking of doing a few things like: upgrade suspension, d1 controller, turbo/supercharger (not sure which one will do me better), upgrade the basics, change out the wheels, pretty much the whole 9-yards.

I was thinking about changing the transmission. I probably feel like a total clueless kid right now when I ask this but is it possible to get a 6-speed MT into the Fit? It's probably impossible to do and probably breaking the laws the auto-mechanics somewhere but seems like a feasible idea on the surface.

Any advice, tips or parts for suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

General consensus is that a MT transplant into a AT is too expensive and complicated to bother.

Get the KWSC for the AT with the intercooler package, lighter wheels, better tires, and better suspension (swift springs are good). You'll also need a better flowing exhaust to go with the KWSC as the stock muffler really kills it. You won't need a throttle controller if you have the KWSC unless you want to use it for economy driving.

The fit I have is a Base model MT. Not AT. Probably should have mentioned that earlier.

well from what I under stand the KWSC is still not CARB legal is it? I think the only FI kit you can run is the Greddy one. As far as I know there are no 6speed trans that will work with the L15. I think people have looked into the CRZ trans but that wont work

Advice is advice. I'll look into it. As you can tell, I'm still new to this. Any modifications you can recommend to change my base, run of the mill Fit to a "rice-rocket"-race ready FIT?!

Ah, I misread that, thought you said just a MT into your Fit in general which would imply you had an AT.

Just get the KWSC high boost kit and have fun! Haven't had any issues with cops regarding my base kit not being CARB legal, just don't give them an excuse to check under the hood.

Fits not known for its power but for its incredibly stiff chassis. If you want speed, be ready to dish out cash. If it's fun on the track i recommend going for suspension and a rear sway.

Koi: how does the KWSC effect your mpgs?

Konespeed: I'm a college student, so cash is a bit of a problem. I'm not looking for a show car though so i'll take those ideas into consideration. I'm hoping to black-out my fit.

Contact our resident racing guru on here JCrimson. He can help with your proper setup for tracking your fit. Suspension should be first, aside from learning to drive it on a track first.

Truth!! Suspension should be one of the first things you look for along with wheel/tire set-up

A Civic Si transmission will not bolt up to the L15 engine. There is always a K series swap.

Saw the magic words in this thread "I want to race it in the future" so I had to view.

All the posts in this thread are great! Lot of smart replys fullfilling your prerequisites of "need extra power."

i personally favor this line the most though. "aside from learning to drive it on a track first."
This is the reason my 100HP 1.5ltr econo fit can smoke Porche GT2s on the track.

If your heart is set on modifications, I highly recommend starting from literally the ground up.

1. tires
2. wheels
3. brake PADS (& fluid)
4. suspension
a.) struts/ shocks
b.) springs

^-- these are all things that will NOT increase power but will make you fast, faster. If that makes any sense.

From the beginning as the list goes down, each mod gets less and less higher in priority at first being a sub-rookie. However, as your driver skill develops and advances, you will begin to "grow with your car" and notice the importance of these modifications as you excel.

Always remember "Fast Driver > Fast Car."

I'm no autoXer but take into mind that in a previous year the NATIONAL champion drove a bone stock Toyota Eco.. on Hoosiers..

to be continued...

Forget changing transmissions, engines and the like and stick to the things thatget the most for the least bucks, like
1. better wheels and tires
2.better shocks, even adjustable
3. lowered suspension. but not more than 1.5" drop
4. better antisway bars to counter the heavy understeee
