Bad front wheel bearings? Help!

Bad front wheel bearings? Help!

Getting a low grumbling noise from the front end recently. Silent until 20mph, then gets pretty loud, especially when turning, then oddly quiets down at bit at 60mph.

Is this a bad hub assembly? Any tutorials on how to fix it?

take the hub off, take it to a shop and have them press a new bearing in it

yea like solbrother said take to a shop to get press out it shouldnt cost more 75$ to get press in

dont have a shop pull your hubs. i got quoted $800 for 1 wheel bearing replacement. i laughed in their face :P

oh, and get an alignment after you're done

quick question...is the bearing a honda part that we should bring to the shop to save in cost,....or is it a generic part that a shop should have?

i think generic but i might be wrong , i ususally take my to star auto parts to get press, but lately ive been thinking of buy a press from harbor frieght for 99$ this is what it looks like, so i could do it my self.

Dead thread...but its time to revive this one: a couple of questions...

is there a way to check wheel bearings?

Does pulling off the hub require special tools? I recently got two studs broken by a shop when I asked for a tire rotation and now I have a weird grumbling from the front at low speed and a whump, whump (barely audible) between 40--60mpm.

so I'm preparing to replace bearing ($60 on bernardi parts)

oh and I saw these on ebay...says they'll fit an 08...would it fit a 09 and above?

not sure if it will fit an 09+ but that's the wheel bearing i have sitting on my desk right now. i plan to buy a press and make a DIY when i do it

We're talking front bearings here, right?

To replace the bearings [if that's the problem] you're going to have to be prepared to remove the knuckle assembly and have the bearings pressed out.

Bearing wear is measured on the car with a gauge torqued to the the hub. Honda service can do this for you - or a pro alignment shop if you know/have one you can trust.

Have you lifted the front end and spun the suspected wheel? If the bearing is really shot you might hear/feel it, but no guarantees.
Having two studs broke could also be what you're hearing??

The bearing you need is a single unit bearing - not sure of part number - but it is w/ a wheel speed sensor.

Before I would tackle this I would need to be sure of the problem and then decide if I really wanted to get into it. Back in the day, pulling a wheel and pressing out races was easy - not sure I would approach this.

i don't think the bearing is supposed to have a speed sensor. all my bearing is a big skateboard bearing

One side [colored] of the bearing has a magnetic encoder built into it and needs to go towards the knuckle. Least on the 09 it does.

I gotta see your skate board ;-)

huh. you're right. one side is a magnet, the other side is a plastic/rubber boot

Make sure you put the right way with magnet facing the sensor or else you would have abs and light

So the bearing has a magnet on one side...honda wants 60 plus s/h for it...ebay has this though:

Says it is a hub and bearing assembly. would this eliminate the need to press in a new bearing?

I would ask the seller that question....

Have you confirmed it's a wheel bearing issue or are you throwing parts?

Well both honda and an independent mechanic said it was noisy and going bad...but neither made it seem like a big deal...I've asked the seller to confirm if its an oem replacement and in the meanwhile the driving I do weekly (300-400 miles) should make the sound louder if it really is the bearing.

That sounds like a confirm - but no big deal?? To fix or to drive I wonder.

This place just popped up on the forum CFLHonda

They seem to have it together on prices. You could call and talk to them as well on the hub. You really aren't going to need a new hub and the old bearing is still going to need to be pressed out of the knuckle and the new back in as well as off and on the hub.

if I get the hub with the bearing in it items (6, 18,5) why would I have to press the old old and the new in if I am replacing the hub altogether? I must be missing something.

Granted I would have to remove the wheel, the brake caliper, rotors, then pull the knuckle but how is the hub secured?

I was thinking of having a mechanic do it anyway, just trying to figure what parts to order, bearing or hub with bearings?
