07 Honda fit questions

So I'm new to the honda fit (and I love it) its an 07 with 120k miles on it. I got it for 7200 (good or ripped off?)

Anyway. I was putting 89 in it and getting 32-33mpg, then, I started putting 87 in it (because my car friend said 89/91 wont do anything) and started getting 27-29 mpg... is this just coincidence? does te 07 fit even recognize 89/91?
(regular/super/premium)

I am a car idiot... so please no flaiming. honest question.

newtothis: I paid $6500 for my 2007 with 94,000 miles and know I got a steal. I had to put in a little over $650 to replace all fluids in the car and have the valves adjusted at the dealer. After fixing my rear hatch leak with a little help from all my friends at fitfreak.net, I have a perfectly running car at $7150. If your car came well maintained, then the price you paid was very good. Enjoy.
As for your mileage. I only put in 87 octane and get 29 mpgs in all short distance driving. I'm a little disappointed in that given the 1.5 liter engine (automatic), and that my "Toyota" Vibe with a 1.8 liter engine gets 30 in the same driving conditions. Welcome to the family.

ive had a similar experience with my car except i have always used 93 octane.
but for a few tanks i went down to 87, financial problems, then after a few tanks my mileage went back to normal. i think that the ecu had been used to the 93 and when i went down it had some trouble getting used to it.

now i have no choice but to run premium fuel.

Hold onto your hat and read all this thread.

I'm on the higher octane side as you can tell from the thread.

More important than octane, is that you use Top Tier Gasoline. Top Tier Gasoline

is not important to use top tier.

Stay away from shoddy looking gas stations.

Stay away from ethanol mixed fuel. It claims to clean your fuel system. You are better off simply running good fuel. That clean fuel bullshit is just that, bullshit. We have fuel filters for a reason.

NEVER use any of those bottled octane boosters.

You are seeing lower gas mileage because your Honda is dialing back the timing from suddenly seeing more detonation events. Give it a few tanks before you put your finger on the octane as the cause.

In short, run quality fuel. octane doesnt make a huge difference. I start using 93 2-3 tanks before going to the drags. Gives the car a chance to learn it. Otherwise I always run 89. I pay less then $3.80 a gallon regardless (army base)

100% agree. Your Fit has a "smart" ECU and will re learn a different octane, it will require you to run a tank or two.

OK, forgive me for saying so, but that link is like watching a Motley Fool video; in the end, I've learned nothing. What exactly are the Top Tier Stations?

I think you got a fair price. I paid more for mine but with less miles. As soon as you buy your dream car, you'll always see one for cheaper for sale the next week it's just the way it goes so I say just be happy with getting a great car that is cheap to buy and maintain!

wow surprisingly awesome answers from everyone. Thanks. Don't normally get treated like a normal person on the internet.

I went from 33, to 26 (1st tank), I am on my 2nd tank now. It seems to be getting a bit better already.

Anyone else having issues with the hatch getting stuck? I have to unlock with the remote, lift the hatch lever, unlock again, then lift again within a 2 second interval to be able to open it.

A tip ......... you have paddle shifters. There are a bunch of good threads on maintenance have a look around the site and you can find everything you need to know.

Paid $9900 for mine back in Feb, 2012, so about a year and a half ago. Had 58,000 miles. I think I did pretty well. Similar vehicle in my area, with similar miles, is still going for $10,000ish, if not more. I think I did better because it is a M/T. Now with gas prices threatening to go through the roof again, small is once again in.

I get 30-32 mixed driving. Last Hwy trip I got 42.3mpg. Could have been a fluke, but I use it when my friends all claim 35-40 with their vehicles (non-Fit, AWD sedans, etc.).

My wife's 07 Fit gets about 30 MPG because of short trips and lots of use of the AC. It's an automatic sport model. Don't waste your money on higher octane fuel than 87 which is what is recommended in the manual. Also, don't fall for the look of filling stations. They all get their gas from the same supplier regardless of the name on the pump. If you go to a filling station when they are receiving fuel you will notice that the tanker truck has no brand name on the side. It's all generic fuel.

The best advice is to change your oil when the Maintenance Minder gets down below 10%. Also rotate your tires regularly. The front wheel drive on this car seems to wear out the front tires faster than other front wheel drive cars I have owned. Maybe my wife drives more aggressively than I drive.

Enjoy the car my wife love's it.

AH no manual doesn't "recommend" 87 that is the LOWEST octane that can be used.

Check the octane and scan gauge threads and they show increased ignition timing using higher octane which equals more power.

I generally put in 87 Regular for fuel in my 2007 Fit. I generally get 500-530km per tank depedning how far I go on my gas light. I never have filled up on any higher octane gas. I have heard by several friends of mine that putting in a higher octane improves gas milegage. On the other hand, I have also been told that it does not and there is no point as a Fit is fine with 87 and might as well save money. I do take this second approach on which octane to fill as the difference between 87 to 89 could be a total of 10 cents. Fit doesnt need it, might as well save some cash in the long run.
