Scan Tool

Has anyone ever used a laptop as a scan tool? If so did you use USB or serial cable? Where can I get the proper cable and software for it?

I have a really old OBD-2 scan tool that works with a laptop. It doesn't work with the newer CAN-BUS protocols, though.

The software was supplied for free but the cable cost money. It used a serial port. Most newer laptops no longer include a serial port.

I just looked on Amazon for a USB to ALDL cable, didn't find one. There are Serial to USB adapters available, but sometimes they don't work too well.
