A14 maintenance

Hi,

Looking at the 'Factory Recommended Maintenance' on the Honda website it says for the '4' to:
-replace spark plugs
-inspect water pump (V6 only), (I know this doesn't apply as it's a 4 cyl.)
-inspect valve clearance

I've called two dealerships. One quoted $230 + tax and the other $523 + tax. The second said something about the timing/drive belt. When I pointed out that the Honda website said it was just replace the plugs and inspect the valve clearance for the '4' part of the inspection they simply said "oh well" it is still going to be $523.

The first dealership also said something about the timing/drive belt.

My question is this. Does the timing/drive belt need to be replaced in this vehicle and if so why doesn't the official Honda website say anything?

Thanks,
T
p.s. I'm a newbie by the way and I'm not even sure it's a GD...it has GD in the VIN so I figured it was???

The FIT engine has a timing chain, not a belt.
The chain should be good for 150,000 miles at least, and likely in excess of 200,000 miles.
If they are in the engine enough to do the valve settings, it sure would not hurt to have the water pump inspected.
$230 for valve timing and spark plugs sounds like a decent price, for a dealership.
Ask them to throw in the oil change and filter for free, and they have a deal.

OT: How do you inspect a water pump, aside from looking for leaks?

Thanks!

Yes, it is just an outside visual inspection.
Look for corrosion and anything coming out of the weep hole where the shaft enters the pump housing.
Look for coolant stains around the gasket and at the hose connections.
If the belt is off, check for play on the input shaft.
That is about it.
