Rear shock makes metal to metal knocking noise on bumps.
My 07 Sport Fit just started making a nasty metal to metal noise coming from the right rear shock absorber it seems. The shock nut on the inside tower under the access cover is tight but has some slack when manually bouncing the rear end up and down. When I compared the right noisy side shock to the left side shock the left (normal side) doesn't seem to have any hard slack felt like the right shock. The bottom rubber bushing looks fine on the right noisy side. Does anyone know what is wrong or had this issue? and how to remedy it?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Did a little research on my own.
I thought I would update my own post with my findings so far to update anyone interested in this issue.
I jacked the rear end up and took the noisy shock loose from the inside shock well to replace the rubber grommets at the top. This made absolutely no change and the noisy bumping, knocking shock is the same. I have checked the rubber bushing on the bottom and found it to be Ok.
I also took the good side apart at the top also and carefully compared the two shocks as best I could and found no obvious difference.
My best guess now after reassembling and bouncing the rear end up and down while holding on to the top of the shock mounting stems at top of wheel well of both shocks is this:
I feel the noisy, bumping clearly coming through the top of the offending shock stem and nothing on the good side.
I am left with no other possibility than the passenger side rear noisy shock is internally damaged and bad.
I will post again after replacing both rear shocks. I guess I won't get out to cheap since they run just under 100 bucks a piece.
If anyone has a shock source that is better than OEM FMJ that came on it at the same or better cost please let me know.
Thanks

You checked the springs as well to make sure they're seated correctly and the isolators aren't chewed up or anything? I guess there's not much else it could be if you checked all the bushings and shock mounts.
Here are the cheapish aftermarket OEM replacement options, $55-$65 a piece, KYB and Monroe
08 2008 Honda Fit Shock Absorber - Suspension - KYB, Monroe, Rear - PartsGeek
Of course replace in pairs.
I would take the shock out completely and take a look at it independent of the car if you haven't already. Anyway, sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling takes care of noise issues like this because it will re-center bushings and re-tighten bolts, etc. I'd do all that before I bought replacements.

Jjbuilt,
I did not see a way to add washer to try to eliminate slack as the washer would only further compress the rubber grommets I think. I may look at it again for this possibility.
Thanks

Springs, bushing, and grommets look Ok to me.
I did take both rear shocks out completely at the top and re-mounted them and no change.
I can hold the top of the mounting stem from the inside of car shock tower and feel the noisy metal to metal coming from somewhere in the shock. If its slack somewhere after tightening the shock it is coming from the shock internal it seems.
I ordered a set from PartsGeek.com for 62.30 each. Not bad and I guess they could stand to be replaced anyway at 90,000 on the original set.
Thanks guys and I'll post back to report if this took care of the problem.
