Hatch Window Replacement?

Accidentally shattered my hatch window in my '08 Fit. Anyone have any experience replacing this yourself? I don't know yet what it will cost to have it replaced, but I see where it can be purchased without installation for around $250. My insurance would cover it, but my deductible is $500.

You might start by checking local salvage yards and Craig's List. Sometimes you'll see wrecks being parted out where you could buy the entire hatch assembly. By the way, how did the window break?

I quickly backed down a driveway, looking to my left to make sure I didn't back OFF the driveway and ran straight into the large green garbage can . . . whose protruding hinges were just the right height to smash into the middle of my rear window. Quite a spectacular smashing sound. It was dark and rainy and I didn't remember the can being out in the driveway. It sucked. Anyway . . . there aren't many Fit's in my area . . . and certainly not salvaged ones. Found a couple hatch doors on ebay . . . but the prices are still high. I do a lot of my own repairs (though, admittedly, not on the Fit yet, I haven't had it but six months). Seemed like now would be a good time to learn how to do the job myself, if possible.

Fixed window installation isn't the most readily accessible thing for amateur mechanics to do. I'd at least call to get quotes from a couple of auto glass places. You may well be able to get it installed for about what it would cost to buy a new window and have it shipped to you. They invariably quote on the whole job, both materials and installation.

For comparison, I had to replace my windshield not too long ago and it was about $300. Perhaps some glass places around here would do it for a little less money—I took it to a place I had previously patronized and that I knew was competent and reliable and not outrageous on price.

Thank you Rampo and DrewE for your suggestions. It turns out that Kentucky (where I live) requires my insurance to cover glass repair at no cost to me--including no deductible. Though I am willing to learn, I am relieved this time it's not necessary.

I just got a quote from Safelite for $287 to replace our f
it hatch window, and they sent a code by email that will knock $50 off that price.
