vtec question

i have a first gen 2008 honda fit according to wikipedia

"GD3: 1.5 L L15A VTEC Inline-four engine 2WD"

i had a 99 civic si vtec a long tima ago, and when i really hammered the gas pedal the vtec would kick in, and it was very very noticeable .

does this "vtec" kick in if i hammer on the fit ?

thx, jay

Not the same kind of VTEC and the crossover is not as noticeable. On the L15A1 it's more like an eco-version of VTEC.

We don't even have a high lobe for the intake side.

The second gen guys could get a similar kick like the b16 from you old si if they used tuning and a more aggressive cam.

A few times during the tuning process with Vit I could more feel the VTEC than hear it. It brought many a smile to my face. But then the tuning process continued and Vit worked his magic and traded being able to feel/notice when VTEC kicked in for more power. I can't remember where the engagment is set now, but I think somewhere around 3000rpm so I'm theoretically always in VTEC and don't notice it. I also have a 2012 Civic Si but I think I've only hit the VTEC in it once or twice because I drive it like a grandpa during the rare times I do drive it.

I'm not even certain why it's still under the same label of VTEC or E-VTEC since all that is happening is the rocket arms locking to use 8 valves instead of 4.

The timing, duration, and lift never Changes.

Desmond- 4 to 8 intake valves moving with the VTEC crossover or rocker arm lock. All 8 exhaust valves are constantly in motion so I didn't count them in my explanation.

Someone please remind me, at what RPM does the GD3s extra valves open again?

its dependent on throttle position and load. 2400rpm if wide open throttle and 100% load, 3200rpm activates it regardless.

granted this is with a stock tune.
