O2 sensor - upstream or downstream?

Having checked around the forum, I found this thread, which was helpful and fits what my car's doing, except I have the benefit of knowing that there's a problem with the O2 sensor from the outset. Through poking around a bit more, I have come across people changing "upstream" and "downstream" O2 sensors, and I don't know if this applies to my case.

What is the difference between "upstream" and "downstream" O2 sensors as it relates to P0141 (block 1 sensor 2)? That is, should I order the upstream or the downstream sensor?

Thanks!

This specific code generally applies to DOWNSTREAM O2 sensor

Really old thread but I figured i'd add a trick,,

If you absolutely know the sensor is getting replaces,, Cut the wires off it, put a deep socket that barely fits over the ceramic part and break it off.
The a deep well standard socket will get whats left out easily.. Or believe it or not a small pipe wrench works well.

Why cut the wires off?

There are deep sockets specific for O2 sensors which comes with slot to allow for the wires to survive

I see value in this tip. As a DIY home mechanic, why would I buy a special socket if I can make due with my current tool set? If it's a bad sensor, why wouldn't I take the action above? If I was doing this for a living... sure, buy the tool. Faster and better. But if I'm in my garage, drinking a beer talking shtuff and listening to music, I got time and tools.

This is not the last criterion for choosing, and here's why. Moisture, in any case, should not accumulate under the car cover. Otherwise, in the summer, it may lead to rust, and in winter - to icing of the cover that, in turn, will lead to the tent in uselessness and much faster operational life. Choosing a quality awning for the car, be sure to pay attention to whether its material allows air circulation.

The special socket is mostly used for putting it on (less chance of damaging the wires). Worth the $.
