Exclamation Pending Coil Problem Then Sudden Engine Shutdown... won't start... cannot read OBD2

Hi Freaks!

Been a member/lurker for quite a while. Love my GD3!!

I've had some issues with coils about once every 1.5 years. Always the same symptoms: starts with minor engine stuttering, I notice the change, wait for flashing check engine light, read with OBD2, note the affected cylinder, change coil and voila!

About 3-4 days ago, same symptoms... engine slight stuttering.. I was waiting for my check engine light to flash or turn on so that I could read the code with my OBD2 scanner. This morning, the light blinked and as it has happened before I felt a more prominent loss of power. On my way back from work (saying to myself that I would now be able to read the code and change the affect coil), I caught a red light and the engine just died on me.

I then tried to start the engine up again but with no success. Starter cranked with no hesitation as much as I wanted... gave it a break... tried 20 seconds later and the starter did it's thing, all accessories would work, but engine would not start. Called CAA to get my car towed (they freakin' scrapped my bumper, ripped my front lip and all grrr) but got my car off a busy boulevard and back home.

When I took out my OBD2 reader, it would simply not read my ECU... borrowed my friends ready, same thing!!! Checked fuse 33 in case that would help, but it was fine. Unplugged the battery to reset the ECU... still cannot read the ECU with the OBD2 scanner!!!

With only 86000km (53000 miles)... what is going on? Any clues?

My best guess is you will need a new ECM

Let us know what you find and good luck!

Alrighty, got the car running!! Checked ALL fuses because it was just not cool not being able to read the check engine and turned out that fuses 11 and 27 were burnt! Put in new 10A fuses in there and I was able to now read the ECU. Codes were all coil related, so of course I swap the coils and voilą, car is back up and running!

Lesson learned here, I will from now on always keep the following items in my GD3:
-10mm ratchet
-extra coils
-variety of fuses
-obd2 scanner

Thanks for enquiring, GAFIT!
Have a good one everybody.

Fuses don't usually fail without a reason.

I wonder if you have a bad ground or if you have wiring damage on part of the harness somewhere?

Could have a wiring issue that involves the coils and that's what's giving you the fault codes and blowing fuses?
