Just got a new to me 2007 fit sport AT in black. 138k miles. It was destined for the junk yard until i was given the opportunity to beat the junk yard price, which i did.
Original owner was quoted $1200 to potentially replace the transmission after the fit wouldn't move and was towed. The owner had enough and bought a new 2019 subaru that day!
I bought the car for $300 As you all may have suspected it was the axles. Put in 2 new axles and she is moving again.
Inside was very dirty thanks to a long haired dog and an owner that didn't believe in cleaning im assuming.
After about 3hr or deep cleaning everything and washing the seats with a hand held carpet washer + lots of Fabreeze, its pretty clean.

This was the first site i saw when looking for answers so i decided to join.
This will be my gas saver commute car, I own a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab that i daily drive now. I rather not spend that much on gas per month so im pretty stoked.

Things i will do slowly will be all fluids, front brakes and inspect the drums and replace if needed.
No mods, just maintenance items and keep it clean.
Body is solid, no real rust out. Paint it bad, will need a full cut/polish/wax in spring time.

Did you make pictures while replacing axles? What method did you use to pull the ball joint studs out of the steering knuckles?

 

No i did not take pics but what i did was remove the 2 bolts that hold the shock, then i was able to push things around and it was very simple. I didnt want to break the ball joint since it looked old but not busted yet. Didnt want to risk it.

I have the fit at my house now that it's registered so I will post some pics today
So far I have exactly $540 into it
300 for car
50 towing
100 for 2 axles
40 for a set of snow tires and steelies (amazing Craigslist find)
50 for hub caps, floor mats

 

 

1. New plugs soon (then every 60K)
2. Valve adjust (Mechanical tappets, no hydraulic adjustment.. Needs done every 50 to 60 K, its easy.. )
3. New igniters/coil packs, They bake out because of the design, Rock auto sells the hitachi's like factory for like 200 set. Prob good normally for about 80 to 120K depending on the operating temp of where you live.
4. These engines have the standard OHC aluminum head spark plug issue of coming loose. Make sure they are clean when you put them in ,, use a nylon rifle brush to clean the spark-plug holes. use just a micro dab of anti seize on the first thread of the plug. (< a 1/2 a BB worth) USE A TORQUE WRENCH!!!
5. Change the oil, use the honda oil (Synthetic) or any name brand equiv with the right rating. I get coupons from local dealer for 15% off on parts in the mail and it includes oil.

Oh and ,, screw Honda specs on service,,, these engines do need attention, nothing heavy. But despite honda's assertions these cars NEED a valve adjust especially if you drive them hard. (The old 80's CVCC civics valves and such were the same way.. )

haha thanks. Battery isnt holding charge, especially in these singe digits. I charged it overnight but still cant go 2 days w/o being dead so another $120 for an interstate.
Im up to $660.

 

At any rate $450 car is a can of worms (had same experience with my Camry). When broken axle is misdiagnosed as bad a/t, be prepare to find some other grossly neglected areas

 

Besides being rusty underneath, its a decent ride. I was able to look at service records on Mycarfax.com. It has gotten regular oil changes and few dealer visits for routine maintenance. Has newer rear shocks and rear drums.
I will need to do front brakes at some point and check plugs and trans fluid soon.
