Tow Hook Differences

I put 'tow hook' into the search engine and came up with at least one billet aluminum version along with a steel design off of Ebay which evidently screws into a hole in the bumper (s?) and then obviously/hopefully into the frame.
I'm not looking at my Fit right now but seem to remember a cutout of some sort on at least one bumper.
Looking for thoughts on this; as I'm not seeing anything advertised as using hardened hardware or even (thickness) dimensions listed for comparison sakes in regards to the aluminum products...or anything at all about hardened steel in regards to the (I'm guessing questionable) 'screw-in' version.

Either design would be just fine for towing a Fit to the starting line...yet there seems to be not enough information offered to guess whether they'd hold up on a ditch pull at an awkward angle.
(Edit: sorry for the spelling error in the title; I evidently can't change it).

Post #2 here... https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-...-tow-hook.html ...mentions holes needing to be drilled.

Anybody?

hey, that links to my post last year! awesome

anyway, i never installed a tow hook on my gd3 but a friend of mine has. he bought a universal cusco front/rear tow hook set (IIRC, they're made from hardened steel). he was an avid track attendee but i don't know if he ever had to be pulled out of a ditch. the rear bolted onto the existing tow loop/hook but for the front someone at h-fit told him he needed to drill into the radiator support to mount them or have custom brackets made.

your best bet is to buy a tow hook similar to this one:

it screws into the OEM tow mount underneath the circular cap on your front bumper. j's racing makes a front/rear set, can't go wrong with that.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't realize that those bumper holes were for tie-down hooks on the boat ride over here and that the 'eyes' were still stowed away in the spare tire kit.

Also looks as if at least some of the aftermarket hooks have been tested for both straight line and side lined pulls.

Anybody ever tug with the 'stock' eyes?

when i blew my motor, i had the tow hooks that came with the car in, and they pulled the car up on the ramp with it, and hooked both ends of the car down with them. car didn't move and it didnt' hurt anything.

i put the stock hooks in for looks. i liked the look of them, i might paint them for next year. i took them out now tho, winter is comin, and salt is a terrible thing. ug.

I painted one of mine ( i got three).

Looked too ricer so took it off. It would look better with a hole drilled in the cap though.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone...I'll simply pray that I never need 'em and take my chances on the boat hooks included if I do.

I guess that whatever happens if they snap off will unfortunately be the tow guy's decision anyways...as I don't plan on being anywhere near the tow truck.

If you live in a colder climates, be aware that the threaded socket can rust. I found that out when I had to get my Fit pulled out of a ditch a couple weeks ago. I went to screw in the tow hook and found it near impossible because of the rust. I ended up cleaning it out with a stainless 12 ga. shotgun brush chucked in a drill.

No rust worries now . They rusted in so good will never come out.

You might try generous applications of Kroil over a few days, then shocking it with a few sharp whacks with a hammer.
