Smile Keeping the mice out of Cabin Filter

Hi all,
I just wanted to share a solution that I created as a result of small critters in the car. I found a nest in my cabin filter and was interested in not having this happen again.
Issue - critters had eaten through the plastic and cloth on the flap - then nested on top of the filter.
Solution: pull the housing back from where it attaches to the back wall (firewall area) and insert a piece of SS screening smaller than 1/4" x 1/4" (as that is the smallest a critter can get).

Since that time - no critters or nuts in the cabin filter area.
When it warms up a bit, I will be doing this same fix to the '09

Enjoy

Our cabin air filters last about 2 months max before the mice chew them or pack them with sunflower seeds.

I'll check to see if I can put some screen in there.

Hi Bunchgrass,
I also have a 2009 and I have just pulled the covers from the under the wiper blades. I found this opening, which was full of a mouse nest. I am planning on using the same screening only at this point in the air venting system.

Here is a picture of the opening

opening to the air vent in a 2009 fit. planning on covering this with a screen to keep pests out of the car.

I never have a rodent problem with my cabin filter. But..I do find small bees, flies, and pollen in the thing every time I check it.

hi Steve37,
We live in a semi-rural area, where voles, field mice, chipmunks etc are plentiful. After I opened up this part of the car, we found about 1/2 cup of leftover acorns.

Sounds like you have fixed it right....good job!
Mine is either kept in the garage or real close to it....where the little ground squirrels are afraid to take any chances. I also use a 22 LR with a scope!

Buy a house cat or two. They will take car of any rodent problem on your property.

Thanks for the tip on the location. I've had dead mice before the filter in other cars. Not a great smell. I'll be adding a screen to my Fit!
