Oil change

I have a 2009 baby blue Honda Fit named Blue Bell with 190k miles. It has Quaker State full synthetic 0w20 with a Fram filter.

How many miles should I run before I change the oil? The filter?

3k? 5k? 10k??

Thank you in advance for any feedback

On my 2014 (same as 2013), I can go more than 16 000 km before the maintenance minder tells me to replace the oil. I do it once a year based on time as I don't reach the mileage.

Change the filter every time you change the oil.

10K (or annual) should be fine if you're running full synthetic

Edit:
10K miles is only about 6-7 months for me
it's still the color of tea at 10K in my car (maintenance minder says it's still at 30%)

I use 0w-20 on my 2009 Fit and it burns about 1qt every 5,000 miles. My MM suggests I change the oil every ~10k, so I add about 1qt between oil changes.

Oil can last a long time.

The additives in oil do not last as long as the oil

Oil accumulates dirt, particulate matter and moisture.

Bob Is the Oil Guy is a good site if you want to get into it further.

I change my oil and filter every 3,000 mi., and I spend a lot of money on the best oil and OEM filters. A lot of money.

I change it (myself) about every 7.5k miles. That's usually when the maintenance light comes on. Full synthetic oil.

My dealer put a sticker on my car to change the oil now, 5000 miles after the last change. The oil looks good, and my minder says 50%. I usually get it changed at 20-30%. What do you think?

Speaking of oil changes, I have about 80-90k miles on my 2012 Fit, and was looking
at this Mobil 1 oil at this Mobil 1 oil
, specifically made for 75k+ miles. Any idea why this is specifically for 75k+ mileage as opposed to their
regular full synthetic regular full synthetic
under 75k miles (I've been using that one for several years now)? Maybe that 75k+ oIl is a gimmick? I mean, who is to determine that specific oil needs to be used at specifically 75k miles and not 74,999 miles? Thanks!

I use the maintenance minder. I average about every 7,500 miles maybe. Something close to that. If I use the car hard, I change it sooner. E.G. I hauled an old concrete patio and walk way via 14 trips with my trailer. I changed the oil once done even though it was fairly new at the time.

I use 0w-20. Mostly full synthetic but I've also used the cheapest Auto Zone oil too. I always use OEM filters from Honda. I buy them in packs to save money.

Nice Fit name. Full synthetic should last a long time 5,000 ~ 10,000 miles easy. Now what to consider is the driving conditions and the environment. Just because an oil can last 10,000 should you ride on the edge like that. Especially if you do not use a service oil filter that is meant to last that long.. Most oil filters are good for about 5,000 miles. Only a handful are rated for +10,000 miles and those are a premium price for about 20 dollars per filter. If you are using a normal or OEM oil filter I would go by the maintenance reminder on the car which is usually around 5,000 miles.

I'm curious who or what rates oil filters for a 5,000 mile or 10,000 mile service life?

I think most companies do not rate their filters for any kind of mileage.. if they did they probably would tell everyone that it expires at 3,000 miles to maximize profits.

Amsoil has two ratings for their oil filters that they sell. Quoted from their website.
  • Filters designated with product code EA15K are recommended for 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first, in normal or severe service.
  • Filters designated with product code EAO are recommended for 25,000 miles (40,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first, in normal service or 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first, in severe service.
Bosch recommends to follow manufactures oil change intervals.
Fram has mileage ratings ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 miles.

Oh OK. Short answer is there is no rating method.

Without any reference to a testing method or how the ratings are arrived at all you have is AMSOIL's marketing claims. How else to justify an overpriced product?

That is just their recommendations for mileage on use of their oil filters and part numbers that dictates what. That isn't what is used to justify price. Both Royal Purple and Amsoil offer a full synthetic oil filter. Both offer longer service life and better filtration over the conventional paper filters. What you are paying for is a more quality consumable item. There are little details such as the design of the synthetic element and stronger outer casing to prevent oil filter failures under high speeds or loads. People who need or want those little extras are willing to pay for such an item.

The Majority of marketing materials for oil filters is not based on mileage but rather filtration levels.

Occasionally, a FitFreak member will share an at-home "analysis" of oil filters. I seem to recall that @doctor J compared some OEM Honda branded filters from different manufacturers. He cut them open and examined the internals. Your question is a good one, but I think the answer is caveat emptor. Usually, cheap filters are cheap for a reason. I buy AMSOIL oil, but, when it comes to filters, I use OEM Honda. I also use OEM Honda MT fluid, even though AMSOIL makes various MT fluids. My decision is not based on scientific data, but on a sense of caution plus personal experience.

Bob Is the Oil Guy may have some discussions about filters. Worth checking.

Just search on Google images for "Honda oil filter comparison". You'll find many pictures.
