Axle Porn

Here are some racy pictures of my axles. Not even @julianachos has such sexy axles.

Approx. 77,XXXX mi. of SoCal driving. Don't think I'm going in for any warranty work just yet.

Poor choice on Honda's part to market axles without better rust protection. Honda used to be the greatest car company in the world.

Yeah, I'm bitter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a known issue on the cars? I don't think mine has rust issue yet, but I'll have to take a closer look next time I get under it.

It's under recall, so I guess you could say it's a known issue. I live in a dry climate, so I haven't experienced the rust issue yet.

Note that the axle recall only pertains to cars in Northeastern and Midwestern states where the roads are slathered with an obscene amount of salt for three to six months of the year. Unless you CA Fitters regularly drive on the beach your axles shouldn't rust, as shown by the pictures that started this thread.

From the recall:
"The recalls will apply to vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in these 22 states and the District of Columbia, where road salt is regularly used in the winter: CT, DC, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VI, WV, WI."

They can also rust inside the boot .. Just as a heads-up. Mine seemed ok, just "a little rust" then one snapped last month.
Yours do look fine though Just stay away from earthquakes, landslides, wildfires and other typical CA weather cause those can be hard on your axles too.

Correct. I only posted them as an example of axles that didn't rust — due to climate, location or luck. Usually, all we see on the Internet is pictures of disasters. I'm just "adding a data point" if you will.

That's not the same axle that was on my 09 Fit . Mine had a dampener , like a rubber piece clamped on the middle . That's where it rusted and snapped. I replaced both my axles , then Honda reimbursed me when the recall came out.
