Injectors, Coils, Starter and More

Howdy,

09 Sport. Lots and lots of miles. Long story short I bought the car with 140k, it now has 270k. Never had any MAJOR problems out of it, kept up on maintenance, and it's treated me quite well. Now however, she's sick, and I cannot seem to figure it out. Started misfiring, but not enough to set a code. Until it did. It started chugging and idling rough one day and setting off the random misfire code, plus misfires on all 4 cylinders.

I replaced the plugs and coils, but it made no difference. I was a bit surprised. Checked the fuel pressure, it was fine at 50. At this point, my starter decided to take a crap. Replaced it. Checked oil pressure switch, it's fine. Replaced injecters, and it wouldn't stay running for more than 10 seconds. Probably due to the very very cheap injecters I bought. So, I put my old ones back in after replacing the o rings with the ones from the cheap injectors. They had surprisingly good o rings, and I swapped the order in which the injectors were originally in.

I forgot to mention, that after I replaced the plugs and coils, I didn't immediately notice, but it was MOST of the time, misfiring disproportionatly on cylinder 1. Somewhere in the range of 200 to 1 for the other cylinders. So, for every 200 misfires on 1, I had a single misfire on 2, 3, and 4. This is why I switched the order the injectors were in. Woudn't ya know it, I fired it up, and it's doing the exact same thing. A ton of misfires on 1, but only a few on the rest.

I am prone to being scatterbrained, so I am hoping I missed something. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

Misfires can possibly be from;
  • Spark plugs
  • Ignition coils
  • Inadequate fuel supply
  • Improper valve lashing
  • Improper Timing

Seems like you have checked fuel supply, plugs and coils already. I would check valve lash and compression.

Just did compression test. Cylinder 1 is at 171, the rest @ 150 give or take 1 psi.

That seems fine.. as long as there isn't a huge discrepancy between the cylinders. Did you get check the valve lash ?

You can try running a can of Sea Foam in the gas tank to clean the injectors.

Thank you for the reply. I actually did dump a can of sea foam in it before it got so bad I could no longer drive it. I must admit ignorance with the valve lash however. I do not know what that is, or how to check it.

Ah, valve clearance. No, I did not check. Honestly, I was simply going down the list of things to check according to the honda service manual, and that isn't on there. Im just about willing to check anything at this point. Even if the car is screwed, I MUST know what the deal is. Else it'll drive me nuts to my grave.

You can try running sea foam in the intake as well. You might have excessive carbon build up on the valves. Just taking a wild guess here.

You may want to check and clean your EGR valve.
Definitely could be the issue with valves.
Furthermore, what's the history of oil changes?
Hopefully it's not something mechanical like camshaft or piston rings.

I will do so. Oil changes, I always kept up on them. My transportation is how I earn my living, or atleast, its how I transport myself the 30 - 40k miles a year I travel for work.

Also, last night I got a wild hair, and decided to check the injecter on cylinder 1 again. It was fine, probably. I went ahead and swapped 2 and 1 since I had the rail out anyway. Cleared the cylinder 1 misfire code, and started it up. It ran about 5 seconds, with no codes popping up. Started it again, same thing, and no MIL still, which is odd. No MIL set, but it still only runs about 5 seconds and dies.

Went out there and started the whole process over again. What I dont understand how why there is no MIL. I dont know, as I am not a mechanic, what could fail, but not result in a code being thrown. Anyone?

I was looking over the honda MyGarage site, and in the maint. minders section, it says:
• Inspect valve clearance (cold)
• Intake: 0.21 0.25 mm (0.009 0.009 in)
• Exhaust: 0.25-0.29 mm (0.010-0.011 in)

I did the valve clearance yesterday, and am pretty sure the service manual I have, while dated, still says the intake should be .006 to .007. It's a little concerning to see different numbers on the official honda site, and would also probably explain why the valve clearance, when set to .006, made the thing pretty loud.
