Changing oil but not filter?

I have a 2010 Honda Fit, and the maintenance minder is telling me to do service "A 1" which according to my manual is change oil (but NOT filter) and rotate tires. I do my own oil changes, and In all of my previous cars, I've always changed the oil and filter every time. Is there any reason not to change the filter anyway, other than saving money? What do folks here normally do? The maintenance minder is "new" for me so I'm trying to decide how much to trust it.

You're probably right; they may be trying to make the maintenance costs appear to be as little as possible. That may have helped earn Honda some sales vs. other cars which cost more to maintain, appealing to those on limited budgets or on fixed incomes. But yeah, I am sure most of us just go ahead and change the filter every time anyway.

You always change the filter... it's an $8 part.

that's weird, never noticed that. i would definitely change the filter.

there's some people out there who assert if you buy a good oil, then you need ONLY to change the filter frequently, to keep the oil clean. and will run 20k or whatever between changing the oil. course, on a Honda, that's not possible since the filter is on the bottom of the engine, and you can't change it without letting all the oil out. but for some brands, like a subaru, maintenance can be as simple as twisting on a new filter two or three times a year.

I always change the filter when I change the oil. I also put on clean socks after I take a shower.

More importantly, which filter do you not change when you don't?

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense from a money saving standpoint since it's only a few bucks. Oil is the bigger expense.

Makes sense. Or $1.36 at RockAuto if you get their cheapest one.

Just out of curiosity, I thought maybe they'd update the maintenance recommendation in later model years, so I checked other manuals online... but nope... in the 2013 (last model of this gen) and the 2020 (last model year for Fit) they both say just to change the oil for maintenance "A":

2013 Fit

2020 Fit
