Not a Gas Cap problem
Not a Gas Cap problem
Last fall, both of our Fits (2009 & 2010) had the check engine light appear, within a short time of each other. One of us had it coded at AutoZone, and reference to a leak at the gas cap resulted. The lights went out for a few weeks, then reappeared. Both caps appeared to be good. We tried one new gas gap, but with no effect. We waited for it to disappear again, but it didn't.
The 2009 needed inspections this month, and the diagnostic was about the EVAP system, so it would not pass an emissions test in eastern PA. A smoke test revealed holes in the EVAP hose, so it was replaced. The small gnawed holes were obviously from an animal. We guessed the resident squirrels, which are often under our cars parked together in the driveway.
So, we took the other car to the same mechanic, and no tests were needed. A large hole was easily found, in the same location! So, if anyone has a similar issue, think about your resident creatures enjoying chewing a hose.
We've heard about chewed wires, but this is a new one. I recall that peppermint spray may deter animals, so we'll consider that.
