Why can’t I find a new “loaded” knuckle with spindle/wheel bearing pre-installed?

Why can’t I find a new “loaded” knuckle with spindle/wheel bearing pre-installed?

Hello everyone!

I’m at a loss as to why I’m having such a difficult time tracking these down. My 09 needs a front wheel bearing, and I would like to just swap out the entire knuckle/spindle/hub assembly with a new unit rather than deal with pressing in a new bearing.

Problem is, I can find the exact part I’m talking about for just about every other model Honda offered in 09 EXCEPT the Fit. Am I going crazy? Is there any way to purchase a pre-assembled knuckle, either aftermarket or OEM? I can’t even determine if the OEM unit comes pre-assembled or not - I’ve only read a bunch of conflicting info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've never seen a pre-assembled knuckle/ hub set, unfortunately. Changing the hub bearings is a pretty well discussed topic, here. Might have something to do with the ABS ring in the hub.

@Burkolicious Hi, Burk. I'm Subscribing to this thread because I'd like to know the answer, too. Good luck.

Yeah, it’s probably something like that. I’m just shocked at how few leads I get when googling what I’m looking for. It’s as if the possibility to replace the whole assembly on the Fit has been redacted from the entire internet lol. I’m trying to contact some OE dealers to try and get an answer regarding it coming pre-assembled straight from Honda

Interesting; I didn't realize this was a thing. I see "loaded" steering knuckles available for Civics and Accords, for example.

Like most of us, I don't own a press to press in/out wheel bearings. Being able to buy the whole assembly with new bearing sure would be handy if you're pressed for time (pun intended).

Nice one lol. But yes, it would be quite handy!

Can anyone else weigh in on this? There’s gotta be something I’m missing.

It will likely be significantly cheaper to order some decent wheel bearings from RockAuto and have a local shop handle it than buying whole new assembly to just swap it out.

There are about three main things that can go wrong:
1. Press in the new bearing the wrong way (ABS ring need to face the wheel sensor).
2. Press in the hub incorrectly, can cause the bearing's inner race to pop out in the process.
3. Forget to re-install the snap ring before pressing in the hub. (This happened to me. Had to buy another bearing and redo it on my Fit).

It can be done with the knuckle remaining attached to the car. AutoZone has this wheel hub remover rental tool kit for the job:

If I could come up with a good way to press the new hub/ bearing in at home, I would try it. But I'll probably have a shop do it.

In a perfect world, wheel bearing replacement wouldn't require a press to press them in and out. I can replace the bearing & hub assembly in my GM cars in fifteen minutes; no press required.

I suppose I could just buy a press, for the once or twice a decade I might need it.

I wonder if a bicycle bearing press would work.

There are automotive wheel bearing press kits (large screw + various sizes of plates and tubes) at similar price points.
