Decoding the VIN - vehicle features?

I already know the following for deciphering the 17 digit VIN:
1st = J = Japan
2nd = H = Honda
3rd = M = vehicle type
4th-8th = GE888 = vehicle features (body style, engine, model/trim)

My car is a Sport automatic so everyone else who ordered the same should also have JHMGE888 as the first 8 digits. Just wanted to double check that this is the case for those of you who have the VINs on a Sport automatic....

Yup, that should be right. I have not ordered yet but code for AT Sport is GE8889E.

Hmm...the first part of my VIN is: JHMGE88859S. There are 6 more numbers after that which are the actual serial number for my car. From what I can make out, J = Japan, H = Honda, M = vehicle type, GE888 = vehicle features (model), 5 = VIN verification number, 9 = production year, and S = assembly plant. It does look like "GE888" = Sport automatic.

I for one only buy japanese made cars...

If the VIN for a Honda or Lexus or Toyota, etc. does not start with "J" no deal.

Hmmm. My Sport A/T is GE88419S, which almost fits with the chart in the post above...

GE8 - Model line
8 - 5 door multipurpose A/T
4 - Trim level, Fit (according to the chart this should be a 6 for sport, maybe different now than in 2007?)
1 - Check digit
9 - 2009
S - Built in Suzuka

Thanks for posting! So the new breakdown is:

JHM = Honda Motor Co. Ltd, Passenger Vehicle
GE8= Fit
8 = 5 Dr, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, A/T
8 = Fit Sport trim level but someone else says 4???????????/
5 = VIN check
9 = 2009 production
S = assembled in Suzuka, Mia (Japan)
...followed by my 6 digit serial number

So this all concurs with what my dealer told me except for the trim level. Can others who ordered a Sport AT verify this 8th number in the VIN? Do you have a 4 or an 8? Maybe it is 4 in the US and 8 in Canada???? This must be the case since I ordered the Orange Revolution, only available in the Sport model.

My LX is JHMGE88529Sxxxxxx so that means I have a "5" trim level which corresponds to the LX Civic. I guess that's right as far as what can be extrapolated from 2007 information.

I'm going with 5 = LX in Canada and 8 = Sport in Canada for that 8th digit of the VIN. Our DX would (maybe?) be 2, if you deduce trims from that chart. Thanks for your input!

I think the VIN trim level number is different in Canada and the US. I have a Sport MT coming and like "TheSaint", my trim level number is 4.

I just got my VIN number emailed to me today. Looking at the posts, I understand most of the 'code' but can anyone explain the 'check digit'?

My number is: jhmge88649s******
My check number is 4. Huh??
I have a BSP Sport AT w/Nav ordered.

It was build on September 15th and I was told it was 'in transit.' For those of you whose wait is over......do you have any idea when I can expect my car? I ordered it mid July and the wait is simply killing me!!

Forgive me if I missed the 'check digit' explanation....

Found this site and tried to make sense of the VINs they posted, but still don't completely comprehend. (Was nice to see the price I was quoted for a sport w/nav is the same as listed here.)

I'm still waiting on my car also (build date was September 23rd). The dealer anticipates mine will arrive between 10/11 - 10/15. From what I've seen in other posts, it looks like most Fits are arriving at the dealerships 3 - 4 weeks after the build date. It seems like it's closer to 3 weeks for those living on the West Coast. With a build date of September 15th I would expect your Fit should probably arrive at the dealer in about a week (give or take a few days).

Realized my car is assembled in Sayama Saitama, unlike some that are made in Suzuka Mia, both in Japan.

I know many that were sold in 2008 were built in Suzuka. Got mine 2 weeks ago and it's been built in Mid October 09.

Who else has their built in Sayama?

Just discovered mine was, too. Woot! (For everyone else--although I'm sure this is discussed later--that's the C in the code.)
