Love bugs

I friggin hate em. I bought my MR 2008 fit on 08-29-08. The love bugs arrived in my neck of the woods on September 1st. For anyone not familiar with love bugs, they are bugs that stick together at the ass and show up twice a year here at least. They are worse some years than others but they are here for about three to four weeks at time. There are billions of them and it is like driving through rain as they splatter on your car. They have an acid in their body that will eat clear coat and paint.

So I have a new fit with about 300 miles on it just sitting since Sept. 1 waiting for them to go away. I could drive it but I would have to detail wash it right after everytime. I just ain't gonna do it to that pretty MR paintjob. So I guess I am keeping down the miles for a couple of weeks.

I'd never heard of them either but after some research.. Wow that sucks. I haven't seen them here and hopefully they don't decide SC is a great place to stay either!

I did see an article that said the car wash industry depended on the love bugs though, because tourists will normally have their cars washed all the time when they're down there. Sounds like you could make a few bucks if you set up shop in the right place!

they aren't that bad this year in Tampa - - I wash the front of the cars every evening - - they can really mess up the paint if you leave them on
there too long -

A mild baking soda solution will take off the friggin' bugs better than about anything, and should neutralize any acids present.

I live in South Alabama.

Yeah do yourself a favor and do not move here. Between the bugs and the tropical heat and the backwardness it will drive you insane. I have been here all my life and I am about there.

Louisiana has them pretty bad right now too. I thought the hurricanes would have taken care of them, but nope, not at all. They are attempting to ruin my new OR Fit, just have to wash them off every day.

Maybe that's what got my roof...there's spots on there and I have no idea where they came from or what to do about them. I hate all bugs!

I'm not against bugs on the paint, but it's the seagulls on base that like to shit all over the place 24/7. Fat dumb birds dropping fat white turds on my car every other day. They must be thinking "this car is way too clean guys, let's piss him off" ugh. I haven't seen lovebugs here in FL really, but back home in NJ I saw them a lot.

species?

Do love bugs have a real name? Species? I'd like to know what's actually being talked about.

The actual species name is Plecia nearctica. They are common in the southern United States especially near the Gulf Coast. They are NOT fun to drive through. Good thing we don't have them in in NY by me.

That is exactly what I am talking about.

They are about that bad here right now. I got up and went for a drive this morning at 0630 just so I could drive my car. I have a company car that I drive during the week thank god. They do not get up and flying until around 10:00 am so I got out early this morning and went for a drive, and now my car is parked for the rest of the day.
