Playing from USB Flash Device

Has anyone tried playing music from a USB flash device? The manual indicates that the Fit recognizes folders and can play all the music within a given folder, but there's no mention of playing by CD title. This suggests that you have to create a separate folder for each CD if you want to listen to a complete CD. Is that the case? Also, is it at least smart enough to play in track number order, rather than (say) alphabetically?

I have my ripping software (CD-EX) set to rip each CD to a folder. If you press the Title button, you can select whether to see CD title, Artist or Track name (and filename also, which should be the same as Track I think.)

Pretty sure it will play in order, but I'm not sure how it knows this. I think my filenames have a number prepended to them (like 02-Stairway to Hell) so maybe it is alphabetical. Not sure how the player would know correct order without something like this, unless it looks at file creation times and plays them chronologically.

That said, it works pretty slick.

It seems to only play alphabetical (by file name). That is not a concern to me since I have all my MP3s named: Artist Year Album Track Title.mp3 anyway. There are plenty of MP3 tools that will rename for you.

Usually, I put it in "random" mode where each successive song is picked at random from the current folder. If I'm not in the mood for that song, I just push Skip.

Note that the manual says the Fit will not play copy-protected music files off a USB flash drive.

Thanks -- I'm an old-school LP guy so I tend to listen to whole recordings, not just tracks. Gotta use the two-digit prefix, of course! So with your conventions...

Beatles 1969 Abbey Road 01 Come Together.mp3
Beatles 1969 Abbey Road 02 Something.mp3
Beatles 1969 Abbey Road 03 Maxwell's Silver Hammer.mp3
etc.

Yep, the tool I've used for years is MP3 Tag Tools. It's on SourceForge, I think. There may be newer/better tools out there. In the Format Options, there is a place to tell it to add leading zeros where needed. This all assumes you have your MP3s tagged. Make sure you have a backup of your MP3s before you start. If you have a bazillion songs, you may want to create something like Artist directories.
