Lightbulb Navi Points of Interest

I was wondering if anyone else that has the OEM Navi is having problems finding certain points of interest? This past weekend my g/f and I were going to take a trip to Philly and decided we would use gps and type in the place we were going and let it guide us. Well she typed in the name and the only one it found was in Texas??? What is the deal with that. Is there just that many points of interest they can not all be added? Even something that is a large chain? Anyway so I figured out a way around this (not a solution to the issue) for the time being to help us out.

If you are out and about and can't find the address in the navi use google 411. I know 411 is usually expensive but in the case of google it is free so far. I just call 1800 goog 411. The automated machine answers and asks what city and state. After you tell it, it should ask what category or place you are tying to find. Tell it and once you find what you are looking for say details and text message. It will then text the address, phone number and possibly even website. I used this for call ahead seating at restaurants already. I love this service and hope it continues to be free. Hope this helps someone out!

It's small things like this that make me think that my Honda navi and iPhone are going to be good friends. I kind of like this guy's setup:

Funny this should come up, I am planning on driving to my brother's house in Louisiana, and I tried to locate his address in the navigation. When I typed in his city name, it said there wasn't enough information. There is a restaurant down the street and I was able to locate and get directions there. Has anyone else searched locations where there wasn't enough info?

when searching by category, we looked up furniture stores. (we are in san jose cali) and it gave us results for the entire USA. got results from texas. pretty crazy.

dtmbmw- i think i'm going to use goog411 like you are doing so we can get an address and punch it in on the navi. this bypasses the horrible poi search.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one having this issue. Its odd that garmin and other units have just about anything you could imagine and it seems like this one has diddley squat.

I've had exactly the same problem on multiple occasions with the Navi system in my '09 Fit Sport! As a test, I tried to use the Navi system to find the closest Walmart to my home (I live within 10 miles of three different Walmarts). It didn't find any of them, and instead offered me Walmarts that were hundreds of miles away!!!

This is truly an astonishingly poor and virtually useless Navi system when it comes to locating points of interest. It is fine if you already know the address, but almost impossible to reliably find a point of interest by name.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

dont type them in , go to categories and closest to me , and search through them like that. its alot easier. because they will sometimes be Walmart or Wal Mart or Wal-mart. do depending on how you typed it , you could get hundreds of entires or like 2.

I think the problem was point of interests not streets.

You need streets to get to point of interest.

Streets are just a matter of updating a map, all GPS should have all the streets that are active during their year of production. Points of Interest are completely separate and are dependent on the manufacturer to add them in.

It depends if both are using the latest map data. My Navigon's street map is a lot newer than Gamin's (both using Navteq). But, Garmin's POI are much bigger than Navigon's.

...but you can update garmin on the internet, download tons of points of interests. for example, i downloaded (for free) all the north america red light camera and speed cam locations. really helped. never again will i get ticketed. will you be able to bulk load POI into the built-in navi (via usb, sd card or something like that)?

Yea because DVD's can be slow and subject to head bounce. ;0

I get to load all kinds of stuff on my Garmin 880's memory card and can have specific cards for various specialty regions. Plus when I pop it out of the holder it remembers where it was and gives me a foot route back to my car.

grrrrrrrrrr, talking about tickets - i just got a parking ticket in NYC. damn alternative parking rules! i happened to park right underneath the sign, but who remembers to look for it in frigid cold night. i was lucky enough to even find a tight space - and thanks to my puny little Fit no other cars can fit in there in the first space.
